Wayne State 83 Upper Iowa 54
The Wayne State women won their eighth straight game and remained undefeated at Rice Auditorium after a 83-54 win over Upper Iowa. Julie Ann Wagner (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) poured in a career high 21 points, hitting six three pointers to lead the Wildcats in scoring. The win makes Wayne State 19-4 overall and 12-4 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Peacocks to 2-22 overall and 0-17 in the NSIC.
Wayne State pounced on the Peacocks early jumping out to a 24-7 lead halfway through the first half. The Wildcats jumped on the back of Wagner in the opening stanza as Wagner went for 17 points hitting four three pointers in the half. Wayne State scored 11 points off of turnovers in the half to take a 45-26 lead into the break.
In the second half the Wildcats kept on attacking the Peacocks shooting .400 percent from the field in the half and holding a game high lead of 34 points in the final 10 minutes of the ball game. The Wildcats bench provided most of the scoring in the second half pouring in 22 points.
Wagner led the Wildcats with 21 points going 6 of 8 from the three point line. Wagner also added a team high seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Mara Hjelle added 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Hjelle shot .583 percent from the field hitting 7 of 12 shots.
Wayne State shot .431 percent (31-72) from the field on the night. The Wildcats also shot .424 percent (14-33) from the three point line and shot .778 percent (7-9) from the free throw line. WSC out rebounded the Peacocks 42-33 on the evening.
Upper Iowa was led Paige DeVine who had 15 points to go along with a game high nine rebounds. Cassandra Deiters added eight points and five rebounds for UIU. The Peacocks shot .386 percent from the field, .300 percent from the three point line and .700 percent from the free throw line.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, visiting Northern State Friday night and the University of Mary Saturday night in Northern Sun Conference games starting at 6:00 p.m. each night.
