Mara Hjelle was named Monday afternoon the Nebraska NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week following her play in NSIC road wins at Northern State and the University of Mary. It's the first time this season and the third time in her career that she has received Nebraska NCAA DII Player of the Week honors.
The 6-2 junior center from White Bear Lake, Minnesota averaged 22 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in helping the Wildcats extend their win streak to 10 games. Hjelle had 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals in Friday's 76-70 come-from-behind win at Northern State and followed that with 19 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals in the Wildcats' 66-55 win at Mary.
For the season, Hjelle is now averaging 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the 21-4 Wildcats, tied for second in the NSIC with a 14-4 league mark. Wayne State will close out the regular season this week with games at Southwest Minnesota State Wednesday night (6:00 p.m.) and host Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
