Southwest Minnesota State 13 Wayne State 2
The Wayne State College baseball team was eliminated from the NSIC Tournament Thursday afternoon at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minnesota following a 13-2 loss to Southwest Minnesota State. The Mustangs broke open a close game in the final two innings scoring 11 runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The Wildcats finish the season 26-23 overall and with the win the Mustangs are now 27-17 on the season.
Southwest Minnesota State got on the board first scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 advantage over Wayne State. The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when John Plasha hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Joe Wendte. WSC added another run in the top of the fourth inning as Jake Ritzdorf hit an RBI single scoring Jarett Jackson. The Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The 'Cats put pressure on the Mustangs in the top of the seventh inning as Nick Bidroski and Plasha reached on singles and Mike Bisenius reached after being hit by the pitch, which loaded the bases for Jackson and Josh Nielsen, but Southwest Minnesota State pitcher Jared Pick got out of the jam to leave the game tied at 2-2.
The Mustangs erupted for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead over the Wildcats. Southwest Minnesota State added six runs in the eighth inning to take a 13-2 lead and win.
Bisenius went 2 for 3 in the game to lead Wayne State. Senior Joe Wendte was 2 for 4 in his final game as a Wildcat. Bidroski was also 2 for 4 on the day. Austen Wisroth started for Wayne State going six a third innings allowing seven runs on seven hits. Josh Voth pitched two thirds of an inning allowing one run. Reid Lancaster allowed two runs. Sam Rathbun went a third of an inning allowing three runs and Josh Nelsen pitched two thirds of an inning for Wayne State.
Wayne State finishes the season with a 26-23 overall record and finished 21-10 in the NSIC. Six seniors played their final game as Wildcat Joe Wendte, John Snyder, John Plasha, Brandon Polk, Sam Rathbun Josh Voth.
