Former Wayne State College pitcher Nick Schumacher, a member of the Class A Fort Wayne Tincaps, has been named to the Midwest League All-Star Team. Fort Wayne will host the Midwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday evening (June 22) at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Schumacher, a 6-4, 195 pound right handed pitcher, is 2-2 this season with 14 saves and a 1.82 ERA as the Tincap closer. In 24.2 innings pitched, Schumacher has allowed 25 hits and nine runs (five earned) with 21 strikeouts and six walks. Last season as a setup man for the Tincaps, Schumacher set a franchise record with a 1.11 ERA, going 6-0 in 37 appearances striking out 55 batters in 56 2/3 innings pitched while helping Fort Wayne win its first-ever Midwest League title.
The Nebraska City, Nebraska native was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He was a standout pitcher for Wayne State College from 2004-08, accumulating a career record of 30-9 to tie the school record for wins held by Brady Borner. Schumacher was 13-2 in his senior season in 2008, earning All-American honors to go with Central Region and Northern Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.
