The Wayne State College men's golf team is in second place with a team score of 303 after the opening day of the Wayne State Spring Invitational played in windy and sometimes rainy conditions Sunday at the Wayne Country Club. The Wildcats are just three strokes back of first place Upper Iowa, who shot an even 300 in Sunday's windy conditions.
Following Upper Iowa and WSC in the team standings are the Wayne State Gold team (JV) in third at 312, Augustana, Concordia, St. Paul and Morningside tied for fourth at 315 and Central Community College of Columbus in seventh at 327.
Sophomore Jake Hirz shot a three-over 74 to lead a balanced group of Wildcat golfers. Tyler DeJong and Blake Thompson each shot 76, Tyler Thompson carded a 77 and Adam Fields posted a 79. For the WSC Gold team, Justin Cunningham and Brett Shively each shot rounds of 77, Michael Phillips came in at 78, Scott Barnes had an 80 and Keith Erickson shot 85.
The second day of the WSC Spring Invitational is scheduled to be played on Monday starting at 10 a.m.
