Junior outside hitter Tali Fredrickson notched her 13th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 13 digs to help #3 Wayne State College outlast Augustana College in five sets Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Scores of the match were 20-25, 27-25, 25-22, 14-25 and 15-7. as the Wildcats improved to 26-3 overall and 17-3 in the NSIC in the final home match of the 2010 season while Augustana College finishes the season at 14-15 overall and 10-10 in league play.
Augustana held a slight hitting advantage over WSC in the match .229-.205 as the Wildcats had 27 attack errors on the night. WSC had four more kills than the Vikings, 70-66, and had 110 digs to 101 for Augustana. The Vikings had 11 blocks to seven for WSC.
Fredrickson's 16 kills and 13 digs highlighted a balanced attack for WSC where the Wildcats had five players with 10 or more kills and 10 or more digs. Senior middle hitter Jennifer Hefner had 15 kills and moved into fourth place on the all-time kills list at WSC with 1,529, passing Rayna Nelsen's 1,517 career kills from 1999-2002. Lea Hartigan added 12 kills while sophomore Melanie Placke recorded a career-high 12 kills followed by Mindy Moody with 10.
Junior libero Leigh Connot finished with 28 digs followed by McKenna Reagan with 22. Senior setter Diedra Artz handed out 59 set assists and had 18 digs while Nicole Brungardt added 13 digs for WSC.
For Augustana College, Taylor Hrdlichka and Lindsey Petersen had 17 kills each while libero Grace Sanders finished with 26 digs and setter Dani Haley was credited with 56 set assists along with 17 digs.
Wayne State now awaits pairings for the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament that will be played Thursday-Saturday, November 18-20. The NCAA Division II selection show is slated for 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
