NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships Day 1 Results
The Wayne State College women's indoor track and field team set three new school records with one NCAA provisional national qualifying mark to highlight the first day of the Northern Sun Conference Indoor Championships in Mankato, Minnesota.
Junior thrower Casey Buskirk (Springfield, Neb.) set a new school record and reached an NCAA provisional national qualifying mark with a third place finish in the weight throw at 57' 1 ¼”, breaking the old school mark of Katie Wilson (57' 7 ¾”) set in 2008. Senior distance runner Megan Zavorka broke the WSC school record in the 3,000 meter run with a sixth place finishing time of 10:19.14, eclipsing the previous school mark of 10:27.55 set by Sarah Thomsen last weekend at the Nebraska Tuneup Open in Lincoln. The third school record set was by the distance medley relay team of Ky'Lee Engelken, Melissa McIntosh, Paige Pollard and Sarah Thomsen as the foursome placed second with a time of 12:21.99 to top the previous school record of 12:36.74 set in 2007 by Molly Gibson, Jade Lippman, Erin Oswald and Megan Zavorka.
Other medal winners for the women's team on Friday included Brianne Hofstetter placing sixth in the long jump with a mark of 17' 4 ¼” and freshman Savannah Wakeley tied for seventh in the high jump clearing 5' ¼”. In the prelims, Christina King won her heat in the 400 meter dash to advance to Saturday's finals while Paige Pollard won her heat in the 800 meter run to move on to Saturday's finals.
For the WSC men's team Friday, sophomore Cody Diehl finished fifth in the pole vault (15' 6 ¼”) and the distance medley relay team of Matt Seiler, Andy Jansen, Lee Anderson and Cheto Cerda placed fifth in a time of 10:43.83. Freshman Aaron Garza qualified for Saturday's finals in the 600 meter run with a qualifying time of 1:24.71.
