Former Wayne State College baseball standout Nick Schumacher was a member of Spain's team that completed play over the weekend in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
Spain was eliminated from pool play over the weekend going 0-3 in Pool C of the 16-team tournament. Schumacher made one appearance for Spain, working 1 2/3 innings of relief in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Dominican Republic. He did not allow a run while giving up three hits and two walks in his one appearance. Last fall in the qualifying round, Schumacher earned a win for Spain pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing just four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in an 8-0 win over France, helping Spain to a 3-1 record in the qualifier that got the team to this year's World Baseball Classic.
Schumacher spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons pitching for the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association where he was 15-13 in his two years with the club. Before that, he spent three seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. Schumacher pitched two seasons in Class A for the Fort Wayne Tincaps where he helped the team to its first-ever Midwest League title as a reliever and was a Midwest League All-Star. His best season in the minors was 2009 when Schumacher was 6-0 with a 1.11 ERA for the Tincaps.
A native of Nebraska City, Schumacher was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28
th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He was a standout pitcher for Wayne State College from 2004-08, accumulating a career record of 30-9 to tie the school record for wins shared with Brady Borner. Schumacher earned All-American honors at Wayne State as a senior in 2008 after posting a 13-2 record that also garnered him NSIC and Central Region Pitcher of the Year honors.
