Game 1 - Concordia-St. Paul 9 Wayne State 4Game 2 - Concordia-St. Paul 8 Wayne State 4 Concordia-St. Paul used a five-run fifth inning in the opener and a seven-run sixth inning in the second game to sweep Wayne State 9-4 and 8-4 in Northern Sun Conference baseball played Tuesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. WSC saw a six-game win streak snapped with the losses, falling to 12-10 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC while the visiting Golden Bears move to 9-9 and 7-3 in league play.
WSC had just five hits in the opener.
Michael Herman had an RBI single in the first inning that scored
Aaron Krier. Krier produced an RBI single in a three-run four inning to go with a double from
Chris May. The other Wildcat hit was a double by Nate Ackerman.
With the score tied 4-4 after four innings, Concordia-St. Paul broke loose for five runs on five hits along with two Wildcat errors to win the opener 9-4.
Sophomore reliever
Joey Lenihan, one of five Wildcat pitchers in the opener, suffered the pitching loss. He was charged with three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
The second game saw the visiting Golden Bears rally from a 3-1 deficit with a seven-run sixth inning to complete the sweep with an 8-3 win over the Wildcats.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, WSC took a 2-1 lead on a bases loaded walk to Nate Ackerman and a sacrifice fly by Herman.
The 'Cats took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when
Kevin Andersen reached on a CU error and scored on a
Curtis Bussard RBI single.
But Concordia-St. Paul used another big inning, this time a seven-run sixth on five hits, one Wildcat error, two hit batters and a walk, to take control of the game for an 8-3 lead.
Concordia-St. Paul had nine hits in the game to eight by Wayne State. Bussard finished 3 for 5 and an RBI to lead the Wildcats at the plate.
Zak Leighton had Wayne State's lone extra base hit, a double, going 1 for 3 with two runs scored. Andersen, Krier, Herman and
Nick McIntee also singled for the Wildcats.
Starting pitcher
Nick Ragan (0-2) was credited with the loss on the mound, charged with five runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings pitched with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Wildcats will be on the road this weekend, visiting 10
th-ranked St. Cloud State in a four-game NSIC series on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
