Concordia-St. Paul 9 Wayne State 4 Concordia-St. Paul used a seven-run fifth inning to rally from a 4-2 deficit, leading the Golden Bears to a 9-4 win over Wayne State College in Northern Sun Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at Barnes Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to cold weather. CSP is now 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 4-18 and 1-6 in league play.
Wayne State opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning.
Nick McIntee's double brought home
Albert Johnson (hit by pitch) with the first run with McIntee scoring the second run on a
Brandon Fowler fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.
After Concordia-St. Paul scored in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1, WSC responded in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead when Nate Ackerman's single through the left side scored
Cody Jenkins (hit by pitch).
The Golden Bears trimmed the Wildcat advantage to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Wayne State pushed the lead to two again in the top of the fifth when Ackerman reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by McIntee.
Concordia-St. Paul took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth, erupting for seven runs on eight hits, as the Golden Bears turned a 4-2 deficit into a 9-4 lead to close out the scoring.
The Golden Bears had 11 hits in the game compared to six for Wayne State. McIntee finished 2 for 3 with a double, single and two RBI to lead the Wildcats while
Albert Johnson went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Ackerman and
Alex Kreft also singled for Wayne State.
Starting pitcher
Teague McFadden (0-2) suffered the pitching loss, charged with five runs on six hits over four innings of work with one strikeout and three walks.
Connor Keating was one of three Wildcat relievers, giving up three runs on two hits and one walk.
Joey Lenihan pitched one inning and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts while
Tegan Nissen retired all three batters in the sixth inning to close out the game with two strikeouts.
Wayne State is scheduled to be on the road this weekend, visiting Minot State Saturday and Sunday for a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders starting at noon each day.
