Wayne State 75 Bemidji State 59
Wayne State posted just its third win in the last 12 meetings against Bemidji State in men's basketball Saturday evening, notching a 75-59 Northern Sun Conference victory at Rice Auditorium for the Wildcats' eighth consecutive victory. WSC is now 9-1 and 4-0 in league play with Bemidji State dropping to 4-4 and 1-3 in the NSIC.
The first half was tightly contested with six ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points until WSC put together a scoring run in the final three minutes of the first half.
Bemidji State's final lead came at 25-24 at the 4:33 mark. WSC then scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. A
Kendall Jacks jumper, two free throws from Trevin Joseph and a Joseph 3-pointer put the 'Cats in front 31-25 with WSC finishing the half holding a 34-28 lead.
The Beavers scored the first basket of the second half to get within four at 34-30.
With WSC leading 41-36 at the 16:38 mark, the 'Cats scored the next six points to take their first double digit lead of the game at 47-36 on a jumper from Jacks.
BSU was within eight at 57-49 with 8:30 remaining, but the Wildcats put the game out of reach with an 11-2 run and went ahead 68-51 and finished with the 75-59 win.
Trevin Joseph scored a season-high 24 points to lead five double digit scorers for the Wildcats. Jacks ended with 15 points while freshman
Nick Ferrarini added 13. Freshman
Jordan Janssen recorded his fourth double-double, accounting for 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Vance Janssen also hit double digits with 10.
Wayne State shot just 39 percent from the field, making 25 of 64 shots. The 'Cats were 6 for 20 behind the arc and 19 of 22 (86.4%) at the free throw line.
For Bemidji State, Derek Thompson scored 12 points with Jacob McNallan adding 11.
The Beavers were 21 for 54 shooting for 38.9 percent, including 7 of 22 behind the arc. BSU was 10 of 14 at the free throw line.
WSC held a slight 38-37 edge in rebounding over Bemidji State thanks to 11 boards from
Jordan Janssen.
The Wildcats had just seven turnovers in the game to 17 on BSU.
Vance Janssen had four assists while
Jordan Janssen had four blocked shots and three steals.
The Wildcats will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting Minnesota Crookston in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
