Nick Ferrarini adding a career-high 18 to lead Wayne State College in a 92-79 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win Friday evening over Winona State at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 12-3 and 7-2 in the NSIC South Division while Winona State falls to 5-10 and 2-7 in league play.
The first half started out as a game of runs. WSC opened with a 12-6 lead, but Winona State went on a 11-0 run over the next 4:13 to take a 17-12 lead.
The Warriors pushed the lead to six several times with the final one coming at 27-21 with 7:34 to go in the half.
WSC rallied and took the lead for good on a pair of
Jordan Janssen free throws for a 31-30 lead at the 4:46 mark of the first half.
Winona State got as close as two at 36-34 with 3:00 remaining in the half, but WSC closed the half on a 13-3 run and took a 49-37 lead at intermission.
The Wildcats maintained a double digit advantage for most of the second half until the Warriors made a run late and got as close as five in the final minute.
Wayne State held 15-point leads at 64-49 and 77-62 with 6:43 to play.
The Wildcats' last basket of the game came on a
Nick Ferrarini 3-pointer with 2:36 to play, putting WSC in front 84-75.
Winona State closed within five at 84-79 with 48 seconds left, then WSC sealed the win making 8 of 8 free throws down the stretch to post the 92-79 win.
Vance Janssen paced Wayne State in scoring with 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field.
Kendall Jacks followed by 19 points while Ferrarini poured in a career-best 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting that included 4 of 4 behind the arc.
Jordan Janssen (13) and
Trevin Joseph (11) also reached double digits for the Wildcats.
Wayne State ended the game making 31 of 64 shots from the field for 48.4 percent. The 'Cats tied a season-high in 3-point field goals, converting 11 of 22, and shot a season-best 95 percent from the free throw line on 19 of 20.
For Winona State, Kevion Taylor accounted for a game-high 23 points followed by Tommy Gathje with 15. Mason Domask and Caleb Wagner produced 12 and 10 points respectively.
Winona State shot 47.3 percent making 26 of 55 shots. The Warriors were 9 of 25 behind the arc and 18 for 24 at the charity stripe.
Wayne State had one more rebound than Winona State, 32-31. Jacks had eight rebounds for WSC with
Jordan Janssen adding seven.
Jordan Janssen had five of Wayne State's 15 assists while Ferrarini was credited with three steals.
The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday evening facing Upper Iowa in a 5:30 p.m. NSIC South Division game in Rice Auditorium.
