#3 Minnesota State built a 24-0 lead in the first quarter and the host Mavericks cruised to a 62-7 Northern Sun Conference football victory over Wayne State College Saturday afternoon at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato, Minnesota. MSU is now 9-0 and 5-0 in the NSIC South while WSC falls to 3-6 and 1-4 in divisional play.
The Mavericks scored on every possession in the first half, building a 24-0 lead after one quarter and 45-0 at intermission.
Minnesota State added two more scores in the third stanza for a 59-0 lead over the Wildcats.
Wayne State put together a 65-yard scoring drive on eight plays late third quarter into the early portion of the fourth quarter with senior running back
Lorenzo Logwood capping the drive on a one-yard run to get the Wildcats on the scoreboard with 12:50 left in the game.
Minnesota State gained 556 yards in the contest, accounting for 271 yards on the ground and 285 passing. WSC had 214 yards of total offense with 88 on the ground and 126 through the air.
Logwood was the top Wildcat rusher with 38 yards on five carries and one TD.
Devin Merkuris added 29 yards on 10 attempts with
Deshawn Massey gaining 25 yards on four carries.
Quarterback
Andy McCance completed 8 of 18 passes for 81 yards while
Tavian Willis was 5 for 15 with one interception for 45 yards.
Redshirt freshman
Jason Hawkins was the top WSC receiver with six receptions for 71 yards followed by tight end
Conner Paxton with two grabs for 13 yards.
Defensively, senior linebacker
Tyler Thomsen recorded 13 tackles with one forced fumble while sophomore linebacker
Nicholas Joynt added 10 stops.
The Wildcats will be at home next Saturday facing Upper Iowa in an NSIC South Division contest at Bob Cunningham Field with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
