Concordia-St. Paul 84 Wayne State 58
After starting the game 0 of 10 from the 3-point line, Concordia-St. Paul made 11 of their next 14 shots behind the arc to pull away for a 84-58 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory over Wayne State College Friday evening at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The win for CSP avenged a 71-49 loss to the Wildcats in Wayne three weeks ago and handed WSC its fifth straight loss. Wayne State is now 13-12 overall and 8-11 in league play while host Concordia-St. Paul is now 18-6 and 14-5 in NSIC games.
The game was close for most of the first half until the host Golden Bears used a 10-2 run to end the second quarter followed by a 12-2 run to open the third quarter to separate themselves from the Wildcats.
Trailing 10-9 at the 2:45 mark of the first quarter, Wayne State's
Erin Norling hit two free throws followed by a
Kylie Hammer 3-pointer to put WSC in front 14-10 before the Wildcats ended the quarter with a 16-14 lead.
WSC took their biggest lead of the game at 25-20 on a Norling layup with 5:27 to play second quarter.
The final lead for the Wildcats came at 29-27 on a jumper from
Amelia Ivester with 3:00 left in the half, but Concordia-St. Paul took the lead for good with a 10-2 run to end the half for a 34-29 Golden Bear lead at intermission.
A 12-2 run by the host Golden Bears gave Concordia-St. Paul a 46-31 lead.
Consecutive 3-pointers from
Haley Vesey and Norling along with two free throws from Hammer pulled WSC within seven at 46-39 with 3:46 to play in the third quarter, but Concordia-St. Paul regained momentum with an 11-4 run to take a 57-43 lead after three quarters.
The host Golden Bears did not allow WSC a chance to come back in the fourth quarter, making 9 of 15 shots to extend their lead and finish with the 84-58 win.
Sophomore forward
Erin Norling poured in 16 points to lead Wayne State on 6 of 12 shooting from the field. Freshman reserve guard
Kylie Hammer added 13 points for the Wildcats. WSC played the game without second-leading scorer sophomore center
Brittany Bongartz, who missed the game due to injury.
Wayne State made 21 of 55 field goals for 38.2 percent, including 7 for 20 behind the arc. The Wildcats were just 9 of 17 at the charity stripe.
Anna Schmitt led Concordia-St. Paul with a game-high 23 points followed by Lexi Lee with 17 and Meghan DuBois 10.
Concordia-St. Paul was 33 of 68 from the field for 48.5 percent. After missing their first 10 3-point attempts, the Golden Bears made 11 of their final 16 treys and finished the game 11 for 26. CSP was 7 for 13 at the foul line.
The Golden Bears held a 41-34 advantage in rebounding over WSC. Norling, Hammer and
Andrea Larson each grabbed six boards for the Wildcats.
WSC had 24 turnovers in the contest, resulting in a 27-6 edge for Concordia-St. Paul in points off turnovers.
Hammer handed out four of Wayne State's 14 assists while
Taylor Wangerin had three steals.
Wayne State will play at Minnesota State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
