St. Cloud State outscored Wayne State in the second half 51-37, thanks to a 46-point outburst from Gage Davis, as the Huskies overpowered the Wildcats 91-79 Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Both teams are now 17-6 overall and 12-5 in NSIC play. The Wildcats remained in first place in the NSIC South Division thanks to Minnesota State's 77-72 road loss at Minnesota Crookston.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start, taking a 14-5 lead on St. Cloud State just over six minutes into the contest.
WSC still led 21-16 at the 9:52 mark following a
Trevin Joseph jumper, but St. Cloud State used a 9-2 run and took the lead at 25-24.
Trailing 32-28 at the 4:17 mark, WSC closed the first half strong and took a 42-40 lead at intermission.
WSC opened the second half with the first points, a layup by
Jordan Janssen, for a 44-40 lead. SCSU then took control of the contest with a 17-3 run, taking a 57-47 lead on a Jace Kitchen 3-pointer with 15:04 to play.
A Joseph 3-pointer for WSC got the Wildcats as close as eight at 60-52, but the Huskies and Gage Davis took over and pushed the lead to 17 at 77-60 and coasted to the 91-79 win.
Freshman forward
Jordan Janssen scored a career-high 20 points for WSC on 10 of 14 shooting.
Kendall Jacks finished with 18 followed by
Vance Janssen (15) and
Trevin Joseph (13).
Wayne State shot 52.5 percent for the game, making 32 of 61 shots. The 'Cats were 6 for 16 from 3-point range and 9 of 11 at the charity stripe.
Gage Davis burned the nets for 46 points, sinking 18 of 25 shots from the field and a perfect 9 for 9 at the line. Jace Kitchen scored 20 and Brindley Theisen added 15 for the Huskies.
St. Cloud State shot 56.9 percent from the field making 33 of 58 shots. The Huskies were 10 of 21 behind the arc and 15 of 16 at the foul stripe.
SCSU won the rebounding battle over WSC 32-23 despite seven boards from
Jordan Janssen.
Kendall Jacks handed out a career-high seven assists for WSC while
Nick Ferrarini and
Vance Janssen each had two steals.
WSC hosts Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
