Minot State used a pair of seventh inning rallies to hand Wayne State softball two heartbreaking defeats Sunday afternoon 8-6 and 6-5 in Northern Sun Conference play at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex on Senior Day. Minot State is now 21-12 and 10-6 in league play while WSC drops to 9-24 and 0-16 in NSIC games.
The opener saw the visiting Beavers come up with two runs in the top of the seventh to top the Wildcats 8-6.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the second, freshman catcher
Kamryn Sparks delivered a two-run homer over the center field wall to cut the Beaver lead to 3-2.
Both teams scored twice in the third inning as Wildcat senior first baseman
Emily Chandler belted a two-run homer over the center field wall cutting the MISU lead to 5-4.
WSC used RBI singles in the fourth inning from
Kortney Buresh and
Morgan Vasa to grab a 6-5 lead.
Minot State tied the score in the fifth with one run at 6-6 and used three hits and one WSC error in the top of the seventh to hand the 'Cats an 8-6 setback.
Both teams had nine hits in the contest. Sparks finished 2 for 3 with two RBI and a homer while
Abbie Hix went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Chandler hit a two-run homer while Vasa,
Kim Vidlak,
Taylor Menard and Buresh each singled.
Freshman starter
Makenna Adkison suffered the hard luck loss in the circle (6-10) despite firing a complete game, recording four strikeouts in the seven innings of work.
The second game saw the visiting Beavers shock Wildcat fans on Senior Day with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to hand WSC a stunning 6-5 loss.
WSC took a 1-0 lead in the first on Chandler's single down the right field line that brought home Vidlak.
After Minot State tied the score at 1-1 in the third, WSC answered with a run in the bottom of the third as Chandler came through with another run-scoring single that scored
Morgan Vasa (single) to put the 'Cats ahead 2-1.
The Wildcats came up with a three-run fifth inning and took a 5-1 lead with
Taylor Menard's two-run single the key hit in the inning that scored
Abbie Hix (error) and Chandler (walk).
But Minot State began their comeback with one run in the sixth and then shocked the Wildcats with a four-run seventh that included a three-run homer and triple followed by a sacrifice fly that scored the winning run to cap a wild 6-5 win over the Wildcats.
Both teams had nine hits in the second contest. Menard was 3 for 3 and two RBI while Chandler was 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Kortney Buresh also had two hits while
Kim Vidlak and
Kamryn Sparks each singled.
Senior reliever
Riley Vanderveen (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run in the seventh on two hits. Sophomore starter
Maddie Moser worked 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts.
Wayne State is slated to host the University of Mary Monday morning in an NSIC doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
