Wayne State College forced 20 attack errors with seven blocks, holding Black Hills State to a .037 attack percentage, as the Wildcats cruised to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 non-conference college volleyball victory Saturday morning at the Missouri Southern Tournament in Joplin, Missouri. The Wildcats are now 3-0 with the win while the Yellow Jackets drop to 1-2.
The 'Cats trailed just once in the first set at 5-4. WSC then used serving streaks from
Morgan Alexander and
Kelsie Cada to take a 12-6 lead, forcing a Black Hills State timeout. The Wildcats cruised the rest of the set, forcing eight Black Hills State attack errors while
Jaci Brahmer connected on five first set kills for WSC.
The second set saw WSC take an early 6-1 lead, but the Yellow Jackets rally for their lone lead of the set at 12-11. The 'Cats then used three straight points served by
Rachel Walker and five in a row from
Hope Carter that included an ace as WSC took control of the set and finished with a 25-16 set win.
Tarrin Beller had five kills in the set for WSC.
Wayne State jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the third set and never let BHSU get closer than three points as the 'Cats completed the sweep with a 25-17 third set win. Six different Wildcats had kills in the set paced by Beller and
Maddie Knobbe with three apiece.
Wayne State posted a .252 attack percentage in the win with 36 kills and just nine errors on 107 attempts while BHSU hit just .037 with 24 kills and 20 errors on 107 attacks. The Wildcats had one more dig than Black Hills State, 57-56, and held a 7-3 advantage in blocks. WSC had eight service aces with BHSU recording six.
Senior
Tarrin Beller led a balanced Wildcat attack with nine kills followed by
Jaci Brahmer with eight.
Junior
Maddie Duffy recorded a team-best 16 digs and also had three service aces with Beller adding two.
Brahmer paced the Wildcats at the net with four blocks while Beller and
Kelsie Cada each had three.
Redshirt freshman setter
Rachel Walker notched 33 set assists in the win.
The Wildcats will conclude play in the Missouri Southern Tournament at Joplin with a 3 p.m. match Saturday afternoon against Colorado State – Pueblo.
