Minnesota State 72 Wayne State 70 OT
Despite shooting a season-low 29.6 percent (24-81), Wayne State took Minnesota State into overtime before the visiting Mavericks prevailed in a sluggish 72-70 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over the Wildcats at Rice Auditorium on Senior Night Saturday evening. WSC drops to 10-19 and 7-13 in the NSIC while Minnesota State moves to 14-12 and 12-8 in the league.
Wayne State made just 8 of 34 shots (23.5%) in the first half, but still managed to hold a five point lead at 19-14 with 8:19 to play in the first half.
But Minnesota State outscored the Wildcats 16-4 in the final 8:19 of the half to take a 30-23 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats trailed by 11 at 47-36 with 9:12 remaining when making a comeback.
An 11-0 WSC run that was capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Al'Tavius Jackson and
Nick Ferrarini knotted the score at 47-47 with 6:48 to play.
Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way.
The game's 11
th tie came at 61-61 on a
Jordan Janssen tip in off a
Nate Mohr miss to send the game into overtime.
Minnesota State scored the first seven points of overtime for a 68-61 lead with 2:42 to play.
But WSC stormed back and answered with seven straight and tied the score at 68-68 on a Ferrarini 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.
The Mavericks then got a Corvon Seales jumper and a pair of free throws from Seales with six seconds left for a 72-68 lead.
WSC got a late tip in from Janssen to make the final score 72-70.
Janssen led Wayne State in scoring with 15 points to go with 18 rebounds for his 15
th double-double of the season. Ferrarini added 13 points with
Nate Mohr scoring 12.
Wayne State was just 24 of 81 from the field for 29.6 percent, including 7 of 21 behind the arc and 15 for 21 at the foul stripe.
Minnesota State's top scorer was Cameron Kirksey with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Krieger added 16 points with Kelby Kramer recording 13 points and 19 rebounds.
The Mavericks made 25 of 66 shots from the field for 37.9 percent, but were just 2 for 24 (8%) from the 3-point line. MSU was 20-27 at the charity stripe.
Wayne State won the rebounding battle 56-48 thanks to 24 offensive rebounds. Janssen hauled in 18 boards with Ben Dentlinger adding 10.
Janssen was credited with seven assists for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be on the road next weekend playing at Southwest Minnesota State Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Sioux Falls Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
