Wayne State matched a season-high with 11 3-pointers and outscored Winona State 41-26 in the second half to post a 72-61 NSIC South Division women's basketball victory over the Warriors Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The 'Cats are now 5-5 and 4-4 in the division while Winona State is 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC South Division.
A fast paced first quarter featured five lead changes and three ties before Wayne State closed with a 22-19 lead thanks to seven points from senior
Erin Norling and a pair of 3-pointers from junior
Autumn Mlinar.
Shooting woes hit the Wildcats in the second quarter as WSC made just 3 of 14 shots and Winona State outscored the Wildcats 16-9 in the quarter to take a 35-31 lead at the break.
Trailing 42-40 with 7:17 to play in the third quarter, WSC took the lead for good scoring seven straight points for a 47-42 lead following a
Halley Busse 3-pointer.
After Winona State came back to even the score at 47-47, the 'Cats got a basket from Busse and a 3-pointer from Norling to regain the lead at 52-47 and finished the third quarter with a 55-49 lead.
Winona State got within three a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but each time WSC had an answer and the 'Cats pulled away late for the 72-61 win.
Wayne State had a 62-58 lead at the midway point of the fourth quarter and built the lead to double digits at 71-60 following a pair of Busse free throws with 1:30 remaining.
Busse and Norling each scored 20 points to lead Wayne State.
Autumn Mlinar added 13 for WSC.
Wayne State made 25 of 57 shots for 43.9 percent and went 11-24 from the 3-point line to tie a season-high for treys in a single game. WSC was also 11-14 at the foul line.
Mattie Schimenz had 20 points for Winona State with Caitlin Riley adding 13.
The Warriors were 22 of 51 shooting for 43 percent, going 5 of 21 behind the arc and 12-15 at the line.
WSC held a slim 33-32 edge in rebounding over Winona State as Norling hauled in eight boards for the 'Cats.
Busse had six assists and four steals for WSC in the win.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend for NSIC South Division games at Sioux Falls Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
