Concordia-St. Paul 93 Wayne State 86
For the second straight day, Concordia-St. Paul shot over 50 percent from the field as the Golden Bears invaded Rice Auditorium for a 93-86 NSIC South Division women's basketball win over Wayne State College Saturday afternoon. CSP stays unbeaten at 4-0 (2-0 NSIC South) while WSC drops to 1-3 and 0-2 in the divisional play.
The first quarter saw WSC take an early 11-0 lead less than 3 ½ minutes into the game.
But that lead was short-lived as Concordia-St. Paul scored the next 12 points to take a 12-11 advantage.
The two teams traded several leads before WSC used a 3-pointer and basket by senior forward
Erin Norling to take a 23-22 lead after the first quarter.
The visiting Golden Bears surged to a double-digit lead early in the second quarter thanks to a 14-1 scoring run and held a 36-24 lead three minutes into the second quarter.
WSC closed within six at 46-40 on a Norling 3-pointer before the Golden Bears finished the half with a 49-40 lead, outscoring the 'Cats 27-17 in the second quarter.
The game of runs continued in the third quarter as the visiting Golden Bears took a 67-53 lead at the 3:50 mark of the third quarter following a Riley Wheatcraft trey.
The Wildcats then closed the third quarter scoring 15 straight points and took a 68-67 lead to end the quarter on a Norling basket.
The start of the fourth quarter was Concordia-St. Paul's turn for a scoring spurt as the Golden Bears opened the quarter with a 10-2 run for a 77-70 lead with 6:09 remaining.
WSC pulled within four at 81-77 on a pair of
Kylie Hammer free throws with 3:12 to play, but the 'Cats could not get any closer as Concordia-St. Paul made 7 of 11 shots in the quarter and 11 for 15 at the foul stripe to seal the 93-86 win.
Norling led Wayne State with a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard
Kylie Hammer scored 20 points with senior guard
Halley Busse adding 19. Junior
Autumn Mlinar also hit double digits with 14.
Wayne State made 23 of 58 shots from the field for 39.7 percent and was 9 for 24 behind the arc. The 'Cats drained 31 of 35 free throws for 88.6 percent.
Riley Wheatcraft scored 26 points for the Golden Bears followed by Lindsey Becher with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Danielle Schaub added 12 points for CSP.
WSC won the rebounding battle over CSP 38-32 thanks to 13 boards by Norling and five by Hammer.
Busse finished with five assists and three steals for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats hit the road next weekend for NSIC South Division games at Minnesota State Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. in Mankato, Minnesota.
