Nick Bohn accounted for 347 yards of total offense and three touchdowns to lead Wayne State College in a 38-21 Northern Sun Conference football win over Winona State Saturday afternoon in the Homecoming/Hall of Fame Game at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne. The Wildcats are off to a 4-1 start for the first time since the 2012 season while Winona State drops to 3-2.
For the second straight game, the Wildcat offense rode a 28-point second quarter to fuel the Wayne State victory.
The Wildcats marched 56 yards on the opening drive of the game, but
Alex Powders missed right on a 23-yard field goal.
Winona State then drove 80 yards on 12 plays and had the lone score of the first quarter on a three-yard pass from Owen Burke to Ethan Wittenburg to take a 7-0 lead with 1:47 to play in the quarter.
WSC then erupted in the second quarter scoring on four straight possessions. The first score came on an
Anthony Watkins three-yard run just 15 seconds into the quarter to tie the score at 7-7.
Winona State needed just 23 seconds to regain the lead as the Warriors used a 28-yard scoring pass from wide receiver Ethan Wittenburg to Jake Balliu to go in front 14-7.
Bohn scored the first of his three touchdowns on the ensuing drive rambling 28 yards for a score to knot the game at 14-14.
The Wildcat defense forced the first of three turnovers on the next drive as
Jaylan Scott intercepted Burke at the Winona 43 and gave WSC great field position at the WSU 22.
Bohn found the end zone again on a five-yard run giving the Wildcats a 21-14 lead with 8:47 to go second quarter.
Following a Winona State punt, the 'Cats drove 59 yards on eight plays with Watkins hitting paydirt on a two-yard run giving WSC a 28-14 advantage.
Winona State closed the second quarter scoring on a Noah Carlson two-yard run with 35 seconds to play making the score 28-21 at halftime.
Wayne State held Winona State scoreless in the second half and scored twice to cap the 38-21 win.
The lone score of the third quarter came on an
Alex Powders 37-yard field goal with 6:42 to play third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Bohn completed a four-yard scoring pass to
Taurean Grady following an
Alex Kowalczyk interception that gave the Wildcats a 38-21 lead with 13:10 remaining.
Wayne State finished the game with 439 yards of total offense compared to 308 for Winona State.
Bohn was the top Wildcat rusher with 82 yards on 12 rushes and two scores while Watkins added 45 yards on 20 carries and two more scores.
Throwing the ball, Bohn completed 25 of 36 passes for 265 yards and one TD. Grady had six receptions for 70 yards and one score while
Trystn Ducker had six grabs for 51 yards.
Mason Lee added five catches for 48 yards.
Freshman linebacker Tyler Leclair and senior defensive back
CJ Burress each had six tackles.
Jaylan Scott added five tackles to go with one interception. Kowalczyk and
Jacob Byrd also had interceptions for the Wildcat defense.
The Wildcats will be on the road next Saturday for an NSIC South Division contest at #17 Minnesota State with kickoff set for 1 p.m. in Mankato, Minnesota.
