'Cats bounce back with 41-33 shootout win over Minnesota State

            In a game that featured over 1,080 combined yards between the two teams, Wayne State converted two Minnesota State turnovers into 14 points as the Wildcats won an NSIC South Division shootout Saturday afternoon with a 41-33 victory over Minnesota State on Homecoming at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.  The Wildcats are now 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NSIC South while the Mavericks drop to 4-2 and 0-1 in the division.
            WSC scored on the opening drive as senior running back Anthony Watkins appeared to be tackled but his knee did not hit the turf and he rolled off a Minnesota State tackler, bounced up and raced 67 yards for a touchdown putting the 'Cats up 7-0 early.
            An Alex Powders 26-yard field goal at the 3:36 mark of the first quarter gave Wayne State a 10-0 lead.  Minnesota State closed the first quarter scoring on a 54-yard field goal by Matthew Jaeger to make the score 10-3.
            On the second play of the second quarter, Wildcat quarterback Nick Bohn fired a 45-yard touchdown pass to Mason Lee putting the 'Cats ahead 17-3.
            Two plays later, WSC forced a fumble on freshman quarterback Camden Dean and the ball was picked up by Gerale Flye who rambled 34 yards for a score increasing the Wildcat lead to 24-3.
            Later in the quarter, Powders connected on a 24-yard field goal giving Wayne State a 27-3 advantage with 5:27 left before halftime.
            Minnesota State scored twice to close the first half and cut the Wildcat lead to 27-13.  Hayden Ekern threw a 22-yard pass to Grant Guyett followed by a 34-yard field goal from Damian Chowaniec with 47 seconds left before halftime.
            The Mavericks took the second half kickoff and drove 54 yards on just four plays with Ekern scoring on a one-yard run and MSU was within seven at 27-20.
            Wayne State scored late in the third quarter on a Jacob Keiser four-yard plunge, giving the 'Cats a 34-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.
            MSU receiver Nyles Williams made a leaping 14-yard TD catch for the Mavericks early in the fourth quarter, reducing the WSC lead to 34-26 as Wayne State blocked the PAT kick.
            Wayne State's final score came on a 27-yard strike from Bohn to junior David Elder on 4th and 5 giving the Wildcats a 41-26 lead.
            Minnesota State scored late with 1:21 to go on a 40-yard pass from Ekern to Williams making the score 41-33.
            An onside kick by MSU was recovered by Wayne State to seal the Wildcats' 41-33 victory.
            Wayne State gained 545 yards in the game to 541 for MSU.  The 'Cats had 279 yards rushing and 266 passing.
            Watkins had 116 yards on 12 carries and one score followed by Bohn with 93 yards on 13 attempts.
            Throwing the ball Bohn was 10 of 16 for 266 yards and two TD's.  Elder had two catches for 71 yards and one TD while Shane Orr had two catches for 40 yards.
            Sophomore linebacker Alex Kowalczyk notched 18 tackles for WSC with one forced fumble.  Sophomore Dexter Larsen added nine tackles.  J'Von France had three breakups, four solo tackles and one interception while Gerale Flye had three tackles and a 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
            The Wildcats will be on the road next Saturday for an NSIC South Division contest at Augustana starting at 1 p.m.
