Jordan Janssen scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and posted his 47
th career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to help Wayne State hold back Concordia-St. Paul 77-73 in a Northern Sun Conference South Division men's basketball game Friday evening at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. WSC is now 8-2 and 3-1 in the NSIC while CSP is 2-7 and 0-4 in league games.
The Wildcats never trailed in the opening half. WSC jumped out to a 13-5 lead just over five minutes into the game following a
Cody McCullough basket.
Wayne State took several more leads of eight before Concordia-St. Paul rallied. A pair of
Jordan Janssen free throws gave WSC a 24-16 lead at the 9:08 mark, but the Golden Bears closed to within three at 24-21 with 6:56 to play in the half.
A layup by McCullough with 2:21 left in the half put the 'Cats ahead 30-25, however Concordia-St. Paul closed the half with a flurry and cut the Wildcat lead to one (33-32) at halftime.
CSP took their first lead of the game making the opening basket of the second half, but WSC came back quickly with back-to-back treys from guard
Jay Saunders and WSC took a 39-34 lead.
The Golden Bears later came back and took a pair of two point leads with the last one coming at 47-45 with 13:33 to play in the game.
CSP was still within two at 52-50 when WSC went on a 8-2 run over the next four minutes and took a 60-52 lead with 7:21 left.
WSC held a nine point lead at 74-65 with 1:38 to play, but the Golden Bears surged one more time and closed to within two at 75-73 on a 3-pointer with 46 seconds to go.
Justin Eagins sealed the win with 15 seconds to play on a pair of free throws to make the final score 77-73.
Janssen's 20 points and 10 rebounds led Wayne State in scoring. The Lincoln East graduate also had four assists, four steals and two blocks.
Nate Mohr finished with 19 points while McCullough also hit double figures with 13.
Wayne State made 25 of 57 shots for 43.9 percent, going 8 for 21 from the 3-point line and 19 for 23 (82.6%) at the free throw line.
Antwan Kimmons scored a game-high 26 points to lead Concordia-St. Paul with Marcus Skeete scoring 10.
Concordia-St. Paul shot 48.3 percent making 29 of 60 shots, including 9 for 26 behind the arc. The Golden Bears were 6 for 11 at the foul line.
WSC held a 37-33 edge in rebounding thanks to 10 rebounds by Janssen and eight from McCullough.
Wayne State plays again Saturday visiting #9 Minnesota State in Mankato at 7 p.m.
