Turnovers haunt Wildcats in 95-58 loss at Minnesota State

            Wayne State's women's basketball team fell to NSIC South Division leader Minnesota State Friday evening 95-58 in conference action in Mankato, Minn. The 'Cats drop to 9-12 overall and 6-11 in the NSIC South while the Mavericks improve to 17-5 and 13-5 in league play.
            The Mavericks started the game strong, opening up an early lead on the Wildcats. WSC battled back to from a 9-2 deficit to make the score 9-7 in favor of the host Mavericks. Minnesota State scored the next five points and at the first media timeout, Minnesota State led 14-7.
            At the end of the first 10 minutes of play, Minnesota State led 20-10 over Wayne State.
            The second quarter saw more of the same as Minnesota State increased their lead to as many as 22 in the second. Heading into halftime WSC was trailing 48-29.
            Wildcat junior forward Logan Hughes scored 10 points to lead WSC offensively in the first half.
            Wayne State failed to cut into the Minnesota State lead and trailed by 21 at the end of three quarters 70-49.
            The Mavericks extended the lead to 37, with Minnesota State taking the 95-58 win over Wayne State.
            MSU shot 57.4 percent (35-61) from the field and 39.1 percent (9-23) from downtown. WSC shot 35.8 percent (19-53) from the field and 29.6 percent (8-27) from 3-point range. Wayne State made all 12 of their free throws while Minnesota State made 16-24 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
            The Mavericks had a 36-26 advantage in rebounds and a 20-12 tilt in assists. MSU had 19 steals and just 13 turnovers while the Wildcats had six steals and 27 turnovers.
            Hughes paced WSC offensively with 15 points while freshman guard Abby Kopecky added 11 points.
            Junior guard Lauren Zacharias grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Hughes added five boards.
            The Wildcats close out their NSIC South Division road trip Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Concordia-St. Paul.
