Eight-run third inning powers #15 Augustana past Wildcats 11-3

            #15 Augustana scored eight runs in the third inning while holding Wayne State to just four hits as the Vikings downed the Wildcats 11-3 in Northern Sun Conference baseball Friday afternoon at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.  The host Vikings move to 28-6-1 overall and 18-3 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 15-15 and 9-8 in league games.
            The Vikings scored one run in the first for an early 1-0 advantage and broke the game open with eight runs in the third on seven hits and one WSC error for a 9-0 lead.
            Augustana extended their advantage to 10-0 in the fifth with one more run.
            Wayne State got on the board in the sixth when Andrew Hanson singled to center field with two outs and came home on a Chris Cornish double to center field making the score 10-1.
            WSC added another run in the top of the eighth when Conner Fiene reached on a lead-off walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Roberts.
            Augustana made the score 11-2 in the bottom of the eighth and WSC closed the scoring in the ninth when Colin Lynam doubled and scored when Chase Douglas reached on a Viking error.
            The Vikings outhit WSC in the contest 11-4.  Cornish and Colin Lynam each doubled while Hanson and Travis Baily each recorded singles.
            Freshman starter Jackson Shelburne (2-5) was one of five Wildcat pitchers in the contest and suffered the loss in two innings of work.
            The two teams close out their three-game NSIC series Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.
