#15 Wayne State College recorded a straight set sweep over #6 Concordia-St. Paul 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 to capture the Colorado Premier Challenge Volleyball Championship Saturday evening in Denver, Colorado. The Wildcats remain unbeaten on the season at 8-0 while the Golden Bears are now 7-1.
The 'Cats took an early 5-1 lead and forced 11 CSP attack errors in the opening set to take a 25-17 win. With the score tied at 8-8, sophomore
Brooke Peltz came in to serve four straight points giving the 'Cats a 12-8 lead. WSC extended the lead to 18-11 to force a Golden Bear timeout and finished with a 25-17 set win.
Kelsie Cada had four kills followed by
Taya Beller and
Maggie Brahmer with three apiece.
The second set showcased 11 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 11-11, the 'Cats scored five of the next six points to take the biggest lead of the set at 16-12 following a Golden Bear attack error. WSC still held a 22-19 lead, but CSP battled back to even the score at 23-23. The 'Cats used kills from Beller and Cada to close out the second set 25-23 victory.
Cada had the hot hand for the 'Cats in the second set with seven kills while Beller and Brahmer each had five.
The third set saw Wayne State rally from a 20-14 deficit, surging late to post another 25-23 set win to complete the match sweep.
After CSP took an early 8-3 lead, WSC came back to take an 11-10 lead. But the Golden Bears regained the lead and built an 18-13 advantage to force a Wildcat timeout. With CSP still leading 20-15, sophomore
Havyn Heinz highlighted the Wildcat comeback serving seven straight points that included an ace to give WSC a 22-20 advantage.
The Golden Bears battled back to forge a 23-23 but WSC produced kills from Beller and
Rachel Walker to end the set for a 25-23 win.
Beller had six kills in the deciding third set followed by Cada with four. Heinz had a pair of service aces and seven digs.
Wayne State posted a .301 attack percentage to .188 for Concordia-St. Paul despite the Golden Bears recording two more kills 46-44. The 'Cats had just 10 attack errors compared to 22 for CSP. WSC had one more dig than Concordia-St. Paul 53-52 while both teams had six blocks. The Golden Bears held a 5-2 edge in service aces but had seven serving errors to just two for the Wildcats.
Cada led Wayne State with 15 kills and 11 digs followed by Beller with 14 kills. Sophomore
Havyn Heinz recorded a team-high 14 digs and had two service aces while senior libero
Jessie Brandl had 11 digs. Senior setter
Rachel Walker handed out 40 set assists.
Four Wayne State players were named to the Colorado Premier Challenge All-Tournament Team. Sophomore middle hitter
Maggie Brahmer was selected Most Valuable Player while junior setter
