Wayne State scored a season-high 56 points while gaining a season-best 532 yards as the Wildcats downed Concordia-St. Paul 56-21 Saturday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. WSC ends the regular season with an 8-3 record, 7-3 in the NSIC, while CSP closes at 3-8 and 2-8 in league play. Starting the day Wayne State was ranked ninth in the NCAA Super Region 4 Football Rankings.
The 'Cats opened the game with a pair of impressive touchdown drives to take a 14-0 first quarter lead.
Sophomore running back
Dawson Forgy scampered 25 yards for a score on the opening series, capping a five-play, 79-yard drive, giving WSC a 7-0 lead.
After forcing a CSP punt, the 'Cats scored again as junior quarterback
Nick Bohn tossed a 12-yard scoring pass to junior
Jadon Johnson to culminate a 75-yard drive on six plays putting WSC ahead 14-0 with 8:49 left in the quarter.
The WSC defense created a turnover early in the second quarter resulting in Wildcat points as freshman
Carter Sitzman recovered a Golden Bear fumble at the CSP 32. Three plays later, Bohn rushed for a one-yard score giving the 'Cats a 21-0 lead with 10:30 to play second quarter.
CSP got on the scoreboard just before halftime as Grant Miles caught a three-yard pass from quarterback Conner Cordts with 23 seconds left in the half to make the score 21-7.
Wayne State opened the second half with a touchdown as junior linebacker
Dexter Larsen picked up a loose ball following a Wildcat sack and sprinted 20 yards for a score giving the 'Cats a 28-7 lead 19 seconds into the second half.
WSC grabbed a 35-7 lead four minutes later when Bohn fired a 72-yard scoring pass to junior
Ashten Schmaderer to cap an 85-yard drive on just three plays.
The Golden Bears made the score 35-14 with 6:02 to play third quarter when wide receiver Troy Ellison threw a 10-yard pass to Peter Udoibok.
Later in the quarter, the Wildcat defense forced another turnover resulting in WSC points as
Jacob Byrd intercepted a CSP pass and returned it 33 yards to the Golden Bear 5. Two plays later, Forgy found the end zone for a second time on a five-yard run giving the 'Cats a 42-14 edge.
CSP scored on the next drive as Cordts threw a 19-yard TD pass to Drew Enke making the score 42-21.
Wayne State scored twice in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring. The first was a 10-yard run by Bohn with 10:52 to play making the score 49-21.
Another turnover created by the WSC defense, an interception by redshirt freshman Joe Morrison, set up the final Wildcat points as Forgy scored a third touchdown of the game on a one-yard run to make the final score 56-21.
Wayne State gained 532 yards in the contest compared to 293 for Concordia-St. Paul. The 'Cats had 213 rushing and 319 passing.
Forgy rushed for 89 yards on 19 carries and had three TD's while
Latravious Boyd added 59 yards on 10 rushes. Bohn had 26 yards on 10 carries and two scores, giving him 12 rushing TD's for the year.
Throwing the ball Bohn completed 18 of 21 passes for 319 yards and two scores. Boyd had four catches for 65 yards with
Jadon Johnson adding four receptions for 55 yards and one score. Schmaderer had a 100-yard receiving day with two grabs for 102 yards and one TD.
The Wildcat defense forced four turnovers resulting in 21 WSC points. Larsen finished with a team-high eight tackles plus a 20-yard fumble return for touchdown.
Alex Schall and
Rex Becker each added seven stops. Byrd ended the game with six tackles, an interception for 33 return yards and a pass breakup.
