JJ Ferrin was a perfect 6 of 6 from 3-point range and scored 21 points off the bench in just 19 minutes playing time to lead the Wildcats in a 79-45 win over Puerto Rico-Bayamon Sunday morning to close out play at the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. WSC is now 3-0 on the season while Puerto Rico-Bayamon is 0-1.
The Wildcats never trailed in the contest, taking an early 7-0 lead following the first of Ferrin's six treys in the game at the 16:37 mark of the opening half.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon closed within four at 10-6, but took their first double digit lead of the game at 19-9 on an
Alec Millender jumper with 10:20 to play in the half.
After WSC pushed the lead to 22-9, PR-Bayamon got within seven at 24-17 with 7:40 remaining, but WSC closed the half strong and took their biggest lead of the half at 42-24 on another Ferrin trey to end the half.
The second half saw the Wildcats open with a 19-6 scoring run to take a 61-30 lead and 14 different players saw action in the half with 12 scoring as Wayne State finished with the 79-45 victory.
Ferrin's 21 points led Wayne State thanks to a perfect 6 for 6 behind the arc.
Trey Deveaux added 13 points while
Alec Millender scored 10.
Wayne State shot 46 percent from the field making 23 of 50 shots including 10 for 19 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 23 of 31 at the free throw line.
Bryan Rodriguez had 11 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
Bayamon was 13 of 51 shooting for 25.5 percent and was 16 for 28 at the charity stripe.
PR-Bayamon had one more rebound than WSC 33-32.
Cody McCullough hauled in 10 rebounds for the 'Cats.
Millender handed out seven assists and had two steals.
Wayne State will be in action again on Friday evening hosting Simpson College in the home opener at 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
