#8 Creighton sank 11 first half 3-pointers on their way to a 49-24 halftime lead and the Bluejays downed Wayne State College 95-48 in men's basketball exhibition game Friday evening at CHI Health Center in Omaha.
The Bluejays never trailed in the contest. Creighton scored the first two baskets of the game and led 7-2. An
Alec Millender 3-pointer got the 'Cats within two at 7-5 at the 18:14 mark of the first half, but the Bluejays scored the next 11 points while holding WSC scoreless for a stretch of 4:48 until a
Trey Deveaux pullup jumper snapped the Creighton scoring run.
WSC trailed 27-11 at the midway point of the opening half following a jumper by freshman
JJ Ferrin. The Bluejays used a 14-3 run over the next 4:55 to take a 41-14 lead at the 5:23 mark and ended the first half with a 49-24 lead on the Wildcats.
Creighton's Trey Alexander and Deveaux traded baskets to open the second half. Then the Bluejays reeled off eight straight points leading into a 59-26 lead at the first media timeout of the second half.
The Wildcats never gave up against the Bluejays and used consecutive baskets by Millender along with a pair of baskets from
David Harmon to make the score 69-39 with 11:48 remaining.
Both teams used multiple lineups in the final 10 minutes of the contest and Creighton ended the night with a 95-48 triumph.
Wayne State ended the game making 19 of 62 shots for 30.6 percent, including 2 for 12 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 8 for 12 at the free throw line.
Deveaux led the Wildcats with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds while Milender also hit double figures with 13 points on 6 of 11 shooting.
For Creighton, Trey Alexander poured in a game-high 22 points while Steven Ashworth, Baylor Scheierman and Jonathan Lawson each chipped in 12 points.
The Bluejays ended the night shooting 52.9 percent from the field making 36 of 68 shots. Creighton was 16 for 38 from 3-point range and 7 of 12 at the free throw line.
Creighton held a 51-31 advantage in rebounding. WSC had 10 turnovers in the game to nine on the Bluejays.
Millender had three of Wayne State's seven steals in the contest.
