Concordia-St. Paul defeats Wildcats 65-58

            Concordia-St. Paul made 13 of 15 free throws compared to just 2 of 3 for Wayne State as the Golden Bears topped the Wildcats 65-58 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Gangelhoff Center.  CSP is now 7-1 and 3-0 in the league while WSC is 3-3 and 0-3 in the NSIC.
            The opening quarter saw the Wildcats hold an 11-10 lead at the midway point, but CSP scored 10 straight points in the final 4:20 of the quarter to take a 20-11 lead.
            The Wildcats got as close as three in the second quarter at 22-19 following a Meg Rietz basket with 6:25 to play in the half, but the Golden Bears finished the half with a 32-26 lead.
            Wayne State got off to a strong start in the third quarter and fueled by back-to-back baskets from Wayne freshman Brooklyn Kruse the Wildcats took a 37-36 lead at the 6:33 mark of the quarter.  But Concordia-St. Paul rallied with an 11-2 scoring run and went up 47-39 with 4:43 left in the quarter and finished the third with a 54-46 lead.
            The 'Cats made one last run at the Golden Bears, using a pair of Maya Fitzpatrick baskets and a layup from Britney Ho to get within two at 54-52.  CSP then scored the next six points to increase the lead to eight again and finished the contest with a 65-58 win.
            Fitzpatrick and Ho had 16 points each to lead Wayne State in scoring with Kruse adding 10.
            Wayne State shot 44.3 percent from the field on 27 of 61.  The 'Cats were 2 of 7 behind the arc and just 2 for 3 at the free throw stripe.
            Lauren Wilson had 18 points to lead Concordia-St. Paul.  Ally Gietzel added 13 and Mikayla Kanenwisher chipped in 12. 
            CSP made 24 of 51 shots for 47 percent, going 4 for 12 from the 3-point line.  The Golden Bears connected on 13 of 15 free throws.
            The Golden Bears had a 36-28 edge in rebounding thanks to 10 boards from Gietzel while Ho had six boards for the Wildcats.  Abby Kopecky handed out four assists while Fitzpatrick posted five steals with two blocked shots.
            Wayne State returns to Rice Auditorium next weekend hosting Winona State Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Minnesota State Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
