#6 Minnesota State shot a torrid 65.6 percent making 42 of 64 shots from the field to roll past Wayne State College 110-77 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The visiting Mavericks remain unbeaten at 10-0 and 4-0 in the NSIC while the Wildcats fall to 7-4 and 1-4 in league games.
Wayne State kept pace with the high-scoring Mavericks early in the contest. The two teams traded seven lead changes with four ties in the first 10 minutes of the contest. After trailing 12-8, WSC used a
Alec Millender 3-pointer and
JJ Ferrin layin to take a 13-12 lead at the 14:09 mark.
Back-to-back baskets by Ferrin gave Wayne State its last lead of the game at 22-21 with 10:55 to play in the half. Wayne State was still within two of Minnesota State at 30-28 following a
Trey Deveaux jumper with 7:55 remaining in the half. Minnesota State then scored the next nine points in the next 2:09 to take a 39-28 lead.
MSU pushed the lead to 16 several times before closing the opening half with a 53-42 lead thanks to 63.6 percent shooting (21-33) in the first half while WSC connected on 53.8 percent making 14 of 26 shots.
The sizzling shooting by Minnesota State continued in the second half as Wayne State was not able to stay with the Mavericks. WSC was within 10 at 55-45 following a 3-point play by Deveuax 1:08 into the half. The Mavericks score the next eight points for a 63-45 lead and had increased the advantage to 30 at 83-53 before the midway point of the second half.
Minnesota State shot even better in the second half, making 21 of 31 shots for 67.7 percent, and outscored the Wildcats 57-35 in the second half to close with the 110-77 victory.
Wayne State's leading scorer was Deveaux with 27 points, making 9 of 13 shots from the field to go with a perfect 8 of 8 at the free throw line.
Cody McCullough and
Alec Millender each scored 12 points with
David Harmon adding 10.
The Wildcats ended the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field on 28 of 59 shots. WSC was 5 for 16 behind the arc and was 16 for 18 at the free throw line.
Justin Eagins scored 24 points for Minnesota State followed by Malik Willingham with 21. Harrison Braudis scored 16 with Kyreese Willingham and Malcolm Jones each producing 11.
The Mavericks shot a sizzling 65.6 percent from the field on 42 of 64 shots. MSU was 14 of 25 from 3-point range for 56 percent and made 12 of 16 free throws.
Minnesota State held a sizeable 36-20 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats as McCullough and Deveaux each had four rebounds.
Elijah Watson had three assists for the 'Cats while Harmon and
Jay Saunders each had three steals.
The Wildcats will be at home again Wednesday evening hosting Augustana at 5:30 p.m.
