Wayne State's Comeback Cut Short Against Concordia-St. Paul

    Wayne State tried to pull off a fourth quarter comeback against Concordia-St. Paul but fell just short by a final score of 63-62. Wayne State falls to 11-13 on the season with a 7-13 NSIC record. Concordia-St. Paul with the win moves to 12-12 on the year (9-11 NSIC).
 
    Wayne State would jump out to the early 6-3 lead on the Golden Bears after a Logan Hughes three-pointer. The teams would both go on a scoring drought heading into the first media timeout with a score of 6-6 a the 3:44 mark of the first quarter. A pair of 6-0 runs from both teams would follow the media timeout before CSP hit a shot with eight seconds left in the quarter to have the first quarter lead at 15-13.

    Concordia-St. Paul would open the second quarter on a 4-0 run before a Kassidy Pingel three to cut the Golden Bears lead to three at 19-16 with 7:57 left in the second quarter. CSP would grow their lead heading into the media timeout at 23-18 with 4:43 left to play in the half. The lead would be as many as eight for the Golden Bears the Wildcats would end the half on an 8-1 run to make it 29-28 at halftime in favor of Concordia-St. Paul.
 
    Pingel would score 14 points to lead the Wildcats at halftime. Rachel Dahlen would be the leading rebounder for the 'Cats with four in the first half. WSC and CSP would both shoot 33.3% while the Wildcats held the advantage in three-point shooting at 45.5% to the Golden Bears 25%.
 
    CSP would increase their lead to start the second half to six forcing a timeout from the Wildcats at 39-33 in favor of the Golden Bears. Concordia-St. Paul would then increase the lead to as many as 12 in the third quarter before the Wildcats were able to cut into the lead before the end of the quarter going on an 6-0 run to end the quarter. CSP would take the 50-44 lead over the 'Cats heading into the fourth quarter.
 
    Lauren Zacharias would cut the CSP lead down to two early in the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws. WSC would get back within two at the 4:09 mark of the fourth quarter at 54-52 before the Golden Bears would get the lead back up to six after a pair of baskets. Wayne State would then go on a 9-2 lead run to get their first lead since the first quarter at 62-61 with 32 seconds to play. Concordia-St. Paul would go to the line with 11 seconds left in the game and hit both of their free throws which proved to be the game winners as the Golden Bears went on to win the game 63-62.
 
    Pingel would score her career high with 26 points to lead the Wildcats. She was followed by Zacharias with 12 points. Zacharias would also add five assists in the loss for the 'Cats. Kylah vanDonkersgoed would lead WSC in rebounding with seven boards followed by Hughes with six.

    Wayne State would shoot 36.4% from the field in the loss (20-55) and 6-23 from behind the arc (26.1%). CSP would shoot 37.5% from the field (21-56) while making 5-14 three pointers (35.7%). CSP would edge WSC in the rebounding battle 37-32 while WSC forced 16 turnovers to CSP 16 turnovers.

    WSC will next be in action on Thursday, February 16th in the regular season home finale against Sioux Falls. They will then hit the road on Saturday, February 18th to take on Southwest Minnesota State in the final game of the regular season.
