Wayne State used 57.7 percent second half shooting, outscoring Minnesota Crookston 45-28 to erase a 31-29 halftime deficit, as the Wildcats downed the Golden Eagles 74-59 Saturday evening in a Northern Sun Conference men's basketball game played in Crookston, Minnesota. WSC is now 14-13 and 7-13 in the league while UMC drops to 6-20 and 3-17 in league play.
The host Golden Eagles took an early 12-8 lead 4:30 into the contest. WSC then went on a 14-6 run and took a 22-16 lead following a 3-pointer and jumper from sophomore
David Harmon.
Minnesota Crookston countered with a scoring run of 11-2 and regained the lead at 27-24 before closing the first half in front 31-29.
Wayne State opened the second half with a similar 11-2 scoring run, building a 40-33 lead on an
Alec Millender 3-pointer.
The Golden Eagles stayed within reach until WSC separated themselves from UMC in the final six minutes for the double figure win.
UMC was within three at 47-44 with 11:29 remaining and still within four at 55-51 with 8:16 to play.
Wayne State broke the game open with a 10-0 run over the next 3:11 and built a 65-51 lead and finished the second half making 15 of 26 shots to go with 12 of 14 free throws to pick up the 74-59 win.
Five Wayne State players scored double figures, led by
Trey Deveaux's 19 points. Junior forward
Cody McCullough added a season-high 18 on 7 of 9 shooting while Harmon and
JJ Ferrin each produced 12 points. Millender also hit double digits with 11.
Wayne State made 27 of 50 shots for 54 percent. The 'Cats were 6 for 13 behind the arc and 14 of 18 at the charity stripe.
Peter Fuchs Jr. scored 16 points to lead Minnesota Crookston. Blaize Sagna added 15 with Redi Grant scoring 10.
UMC shot 41.4 percent from the field making 24 of 58 shots. The Golden Eagles were 7 for 28 from 3-point range and just 4 of 6 at the line.
Minnesota Crookston held a 31-28 edge in rebounding with McCullough hauling in nine boards for the 'Cats.
Jay Saunders had a team-high four assists while McCullough had two of Wayne State's four blocked shots.
The Wildcats close out the regular season at home next weekend hosting the University of Mary Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Northern State Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
