Wayne State notched a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon over Holy Family (Pa.) at the Russ Matt Invitational Baseball Tournament in Florida, giving Wildcat head coach Alex Koch his 200
th career victory in the nightcap. Scores of the doubleheader were 8-2 and 12-5, giving Wayne State a 12-5 record while Holy Family is 5-9.
The first game saw the Wildcats erupt for six runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-1 contest as Wayne State seized an 8-2 win in the opener.
Holy Family scored in the top of the first for the early lead, but the 'Cats came back with single runs in the third and fourth innings for a 2-1 lead.
The first run came on a two-out rally as
Carter Thomas singled to drive home
Chase Douglas for the first Wildcat run. In the fourth,
Quinn McCafferty singled and scored on an infield hit by
Alex Calabrese for a 2-1 WSC advantage.
In the six-run sixth, WSC had four hits to score six runs to break open the contest.
Cade Lynam had an RBI double that drove home Calabrese (single). Thomas and McCafferty each added two-run singles to highlight the inning.
Holy Family held a 9-8 edge in hits in the opener. Thomas and McCafferty each went 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run scored. Calabrese was 2 for 3 with a RBI and run scored. Douglas scored twice with a pair of walks and a single.
Starter
Braden Cannon worked four innings to get the win, allowing just one run. Reliever
Josh Kilzer pitched two perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts while junior lefthander
Jacob Kneifl worked the seventh inning.
The second game saw the Wildcats score 11 runs in the first two innings as WSC completed the sweep with a 12-5 win giving head coach Alex Koch his 200
th career win.
WSC opened the game with two runs in the first, but Holy Family countered and took a 4-2 lead with a four-run bottom of the first.
The second inning featured all nine runs scored by WSC with two outs and just one runner on base. The huge inning showcased 10 hits to go with two Holy Family errors. Douglas, Thomas,
Kaden Young,
Nick Ripa,
Max Heard and
Cam Madsen each had RBI singles while
Kyler Essink recorded an RBI double.
Holy Family scored a single run in the fourth and Wayne State closed the scoring with a run in the seventh inning to make the final score 12-5.
Wayne State had 14 hits in the victory, led by
Max Heard going 3 for 3. Essink finished 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored while Madsen and Douglas each had two singles and two runs scored.
Four different pitchers saw time on the mound for WSC.
Carter Thomas started the game and lasted 2/3 innings. Reliever
Alex Calabrese (2-0) picked up the win, worked 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief with five strikeouts.
Brody Sintek pitched two innings and
Braden Sweet worked the final two frames.
The Wildcats close out their spring break trip to Florida Sunday morning with a game against #22 Grand Valley State of Michigan starting at 8:15 a.m.
