Cody McCullough had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead five Wayne State players in double figures as the Wildcats cruised past Northern State 84-61 Friday evening in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 9-7 and 3-7 in the league while the Wolves slip to 1-14 and 0-9 in the league.
Northern State scored the opening basket of the game for their only lead of the night. WSC then reeled off the next nine points for a 9-2 lead and had a 16-7 advantage 7:30 into the contest.
Later in the half the Wildcats were in front 22-13 at the 9:02 mark. NSU got within four at 22-18 but WSC quickly built the lead back to nine at 28-19 and took their first double digit lead of the night at 32-22 on a
Jay Saunders 3-pointer with 3:13 to play in the half before ending the opening half with a seven-point lead 37-30.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 10-0 run fueled by a pair of long 3-pointers from
JJ Ferrin to go in front 47-30.
Northern State chipped away at the Wildcat lead at 49-40, but the Wildcats put the game out of reach later with a 16-2 run and held a 73-45 lead with six minutes remaining before reserves closed out the game for a 84-61 Wildcat win.
McCullough's 17 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season, led five Wayne State players in double figures. Freshman forward
Matt Noll followed with 13 points,
JJ Ferrin had 12 with
Jay Saunders and
Noah Erickson each scoring 11.
Wayne State shot 51.6 percent for the game making 32 of 62 shots. The 'Cats were 12 for 25 from 3-point range and 8 for 9 at the free throw line.
James Glenn and Ethan Russell both scored 17 points for Northern State.
The Wolves were 18 of 46 from the field for 39.1 percent, including 10 of 23 from the 3-point line. NSU was 15-22 at the free throw line.
WSC held a 31-29 edge in rebounding over NSU thanks to 10 rebounds by McCullough.
Sean Stokes had five assists and three steals with Saunders recording four assists and five steals. Noll and McCullough each recorded two blocked shots.
Wayne State is in action again Saturday evening hosting the University of Mary in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
