Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

'Cats snap 14-game skid to MSU Moorhead with 73-68 OT road win over Dragons

The Wayne State College men's basketball team snapped a 14-game losing streak to MSU Moorhead dating back to February 9th, 2013 as the Wildcats edged the Dragons in overtime 73-68 Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference play at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota.  WSC is now 13-7 and 7-7 in the NSIC while the host Dragons drop to 12-8 and 7-7 in league play.
Freshman forward Matt Noll scored a basket on the game's opening possession for a 2-0 WSC lead.
Host MSU Moorhead then scored the following 13 points and held the 'Cats scoreless for the next 4:37 before JJ Ferrin's layup broke the drought.
The 'Cats trailed by double digits several times and were trailing 22-12 at the 7:37 mark.  A Ferrin 3-pointer with 3:00 to go in the half got WSC within four at 24-20 and a pair of Cody McCullough free throws to close the first half cut the Dragon lead at intermission to 29-26.
After Wayne State made the opening basket of the second half to get as close as one (29-28), the 'Cats saw themselves trailing by nine at 39-30 with 12:20 remaining after MSU Moorhead went on a 10-1 scoring run.
The 'Cats were still trailing 44-37 with 9:40 to play when junior reserve guard Ryan Blum led a Wayne State run that gave the 'Cats their first lead since the opening basket of the game.
A McCullough basket followed by seven straight points from Blum on a 3-pointer and four straight free throws put the 'Cats in front 46-44 with 7:50 to play.
The two teams traded several lead changes over the next several minutes with MSU Moorhead holding a 53-52 lead when senior guard Jay Saunders drained a 3-pointer followed by a three-point play by senior Sean Stokes putting the Wildcats ahead 58-53 with 2:29 to go.
WSC never scored again in regulation and MSU Moorhead tied the game on a basket with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 58-58 heading into overtime.
Ferrin and Saunders opened overtime for WSC with baskets to put the 'Cats ahead early 62-58.  After the Dragons closed within one at 62-61, another Ferrin basket along with two free throws by Stokes and one by Noll put WSC in front 67-61 with 1:31 left in OT.
The Dragons hit a 3-pointer to cut the WSC lead to three at 67-64.  McCullough hit one of two free throws with 35 seconds to go for a 68-64 Wildcat advantage.   Another free throw by McCullough following a Dragon miss and foul put WSC ahead 69-64, but MSU Moorhead hit a 3-pointer with 14.4 seconds left to cut the Wildcat lead to 69-67.
Ferrin sank a pair of free throws with 13.3 seconds to go for a 71-67 WSC advantage.  MSU Moorhead missed two shots but was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 71-68 score.  Noll was fouled on the rebound and hit both free throws to seal the overtime win and snap a lengthy losing skid to the Dragons.
McCullough was one of four Wildcat players in double figures, recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Noll ended with 14 followed by Ferrin scoring 13 and Saunders 12.
WSC made 23 of 53 shots for 43.4 percent, including 5 of 16 from the 3-point line.  The 'Cats were 22 for 26 at the free throw line.
For MSU Moorhead, Logan Kinsey scored 19 points followed by Sam Hastreiter with 15.  Carson Johnson and Jacob Jennissen also hit double figures with 12 and 10 respectively.
MSUM shot 40.4 percent making 21 of 52 shots including 11 for 26 behind the arc.  The Dragons were 15-21 at the free throw line.
WSC held a slim 34-32 edge in rebounding with McCullough grabbing a game-high 10 boards.
Wayne State's next game is Thursday hosting Sioux Falls in an NSIC contest starting at 5:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
