Delaney Miller combined for 31 kills while leading #7 Wayne State to an impressive 27-25, 25-13, 25-16 NSIC college volleyball win at Sioux Falls Thursday evening. The Wildcats improve to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC while the host Cougars drop to 10-8 and 5-5 in the league.
Wayne State led a majority of the opening set, but the 'Cats found themselves facing a pair of set points from Sioux Falls before rallying at the end to post a 27-25 first set win.
The Wildcats held several three point leads in the set with the final one coming at 22-19 following a Sioux Falls attack error. The host Cougars rallied and had set point at 24-23, but a Miller kill evened the set at 24-24. Following a USF kill that gave the Cougars their second set point at 25-24, WSC responded with a kill from Robles followed by a
Chloe Hanel kill and a block by Hanel and
Mattie Kamery to close the opening set with a 27-25 Wildcat victory.
Miller had six kills in the opening set for the 'Cats with Hanel adding five while Hanel and
Molly Romano each had service aces.
The second set saw the Wildcats hit .533 with 17 kills and just one attack error as Wayne State overcame an early 8-6 deficit and rolled to a 25-13 second set win.
WSC took control of the set scoring five straight and eight of nine points to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 14-9 lead. The 'Cats extended their lead and held the Cougars to a .156 hitting percentage forcing five errors in a lopsided second set win.
Robles accounted for seven kills and hit .583 in the set to pace the 'Cats followed by Miller with five more kills. Romano had another ace serve for WSC in the set.
Wayne State took an early 5-0 lead in the third set and never trailed, using another strong hitting set at .429 to complete the sweep with a 25-16 win.
USF would cut into the early set deficit several times and get as close as three at 14-11. But WSC answered the Cougars and closed the set strong as Kamery had three kills and a service ace on match point to record the final four Wildcat points in the third set win.
Robles posted nine kills in the final set while Kamery and Romano each had three as the Wildcats closed the match with a 20-kill third set and a .429 hitting percentage.
For the match, Wayne State produced an NSIC game-high .446 hitting percentage with 54 kills and just nine errors on 101 attacks while Sioux Falls hit .255 with 35 kills and 11 errors on 94 attacks. The 'Cats held a 42-32 advantage in digs over the Cougars while USF had one more block (4-3) and one more service ace (5-4) than the Wildcats.
Robles had 18 kills with an efficient .516 hitting percentage to lead the Wildcats followed by Miller with 13 kills and Hanel nine. Setter
Molly Romano had seven kills on just eight attacks for an .875 hitting percentage and handed out 35 assists with two service aces.
Hanel had three blocks for the 'Cats while Kamery ended with a team-high 11 digs.
The Wildcats will be at home Saturday afternoon hosting #15 Southwest Minnesota State in a 2 p.m. NSIC contest at Rice Auditorium.
