#3 Wayne State captured a Northern Sun Conference volleyball regular season title for the third time in the last four years Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory over Northern State at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Scores of the match were 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-13. The Wildcats are now 26-3 and 19-1 in the NSIC while the Wolves fall to 19-9 and 11-9 in conference play. WSC also captured NSIC regular season titles in 2022 and 2023 and shared the NSIC crown back in 2001 with Southwest Minnesota State. The win also marked the 500th career coaching win for Wildcat head coach Scott Kneifl, who now has a 500-155 record in his 21st year on the Wayne State bench.
The Wildcats registered a .441 hitting percentage in the opening set with 17 kills to roll past the Wolves 25-17. Freshman outside hitter
Delaney Miller had seven kills to get WSC off to a quick start while
Anna Borner,
Mattie Kamery and
Channatee Robles each had a service ace.
The second set saw 14 ties and six lead changes between the two clubs until Northern State tied the match with a 25-23 win. Robles had five kills to pace WSC in the set.
Wayne State bounced back in the third set, using 20 kills and a .378 attack percentage to post a 25-19 victory.
Miller had seven more kills to lead the 'Cats with
Molly Romano and Robles each adding four.
WSC controlled the fourth set by cruising to a 25-13 win to take the match 3-1. Miller had six kills while
Laney Kathol had three blocks as WSC had 16 kills and hit .389 to clinch the match.
Wayne State ended the match with a .344 hitting percentage with NSU hitting .189. The 'Cats had 65 kills in the win and held a 78-72 edge in digs over the Wolves. WSC also held a 10-4 advantage in blocks and had seven service aces to five for Northern State.
Miller had a career-high 23 kills in the win for WSC, her fourth match with 20 or more kills this season. Robles added 15 kills and had 16 digs for her 12
th double-double of the season with
Chloe Hanel chipping in 11 kills.
Kathol had a team-high six blocks. Five different Wildcats had double digits in digs led by
Mattie Kamery with 17. Sophomore libero
Anna Borner had 14 with
Reese Johnson adding 12. Setter
Molly Romano was one kill shy of a rare triple-double by recording 50 set assists, 10 digs and nine kills.
Wayne State is the #2 seed for the upcoming NSIC Volleyball Tournament and will face #7 seed Northern State Tuesday evening in a first-round match at 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
