#2 Minnesota State downs Wildcats

            #2 Minnesota State jumped out to a 29-12 first quarter lead and forced 37 turnovers on Wayne State as the host Mavericks recorded a 90-63 victory over the Wildcats Thursday evening in NSIC South Division women's basketball played in Mankato, Minnesota.  MSU is now 10-0 and 4-0 in the league while WSC falls to 6-4 and 1-3.
            Wayne State was close early with Minnesota State despite the hosts opening the game hitting their first five shots from the 3-point line.  A basket by Kylah vanDonkersgoed had WSC within three at 11-8 with 5:54 to play first quarter when the Mavericks scored the next 14 points to take control with a 25-8 advantage.  MSU ended the opening quarter on an 18-4 run and took a 29-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
            After opening the first quarter hitting just 3 of 15 shots, Wayne State shot much better in the second quarter making 6 of 12 shots but Minnesota State's tenacious defensive pressure allowed the Mavericks to outscore WSC 20-12 in the quarter to take a commanding 49-24 lead at halftime.
            Third quarter shooting saw the Wildcats connect on 9 of 13 shots for 69 percent to produce 26 points, but the host Mavericks were still able to score 25 in the quarter as MSU held a 74-50 cushion after three quarters.
            Minnesota State held a 16-13 scoring edge in the fourth quarter and finished the contest with a 90-63 win.
            Senior forward Rachel Dahlen had her second double-double of the season posting 16 points and 13 rebounds, making 6 of 11 shots from the field and all four free throw attempts.  Senior forward Kylah vanDonkersgoed accounted for 15 points along with sophomore reserve guard Emma Frost, who was 6 for 7 shooting and 3 of 4 at the line.
            Wayne State ended the game making 23 of 53 shots for 43.4 percent.  The 'Cats hit 2 of 13 from the 3-point line and made 15 of 16 free throws.
            For Minnesota State, Natalie Bremer recorded 21 points.  Mackenzie Schweim (14), Ava Stier (13) and Hannah Herzig (10) also reached double figures.
            MSU was 30 of 79 from the field for 38 percent, including 10 for 26 behind the arc.  The Mavericks canned 20 of 25 free throws.
            WSC held a slight 42-38 edge in rebounding thanks to Dahlen's 13 boards and five from Tenleigh Smith.  Smith had four assists for WSC while Dahlen and vanDonkersgoed each had two assists and two blocked shots.
            Minnesota State held a 35-6 advantage in points off turnovers thanks for forcing 36 on the Wildcats. 
            Wayne State continues their NSIC South Division road trip Saturday with a game at St. Cloud State starting at 4 p.m.
