Wayne State outscored Bemidji State 19-7 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 58-55 win over Bemidji State Saturday evening in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne on Senior Night. The Wildcats are now 11-14 and 8-13 in the NSIC while the visiting Beavers drop to 6-18 and 4-16 in league play.
Bemidji State opened the game with blistering shooting, hitting 8 of 11 shots to start the game (72.7%), to take a 21-18 lead on the Wildcats.
Wayne State opened the second quarter with baskets by
Meg Rietz and a 3-pointer from
Kylah vanDonkersgoed to take a 23-21 lead early, but Bemidji State reeled off 10 straight points to grab an eight point lead at 31-23 before ending the half with a 31-27 lead on the Wildcats.
More strong shooting by the Beavers in the third quarter – 8 of 16 for 50 percent – as Bemidji State extended their advantage to 48-39 after three quarters.
Early in the fourth quarter, Bemidji State still held a six point lead – 50-44 with 7:07 to play – when the Wildcats began their comeback.
Baskets by
Tate Norblade,
Carsyn Boswell and
Maya Fitzpatrick tied the score at 50-50.
After BSU regained the lead with a 3-pointer, WSC used a pair of Boswell free throws and one of two by vanDonkersgoed with 1:36 to play to even the score at 53-53.
WSC took their first lead since early in the second quarter at 54-53 on a Fitzpatrick free throw with 42 seconds remaining.
Following a Bemidji State turnover, Boswell was fouled and sank two free throws for a 56-53 lead with 30 seconds left. After a missed shot by BSU, vanDonkersgoed was fouled and sealed the win with two more free throws with 11 seconds remaining for a 58-55 win.
Fitzpatrick was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 19 points for Wayne State. Norblade and vanDonkersgoed each added eight points.
WSC made 19 of 55 shots for 34.5 percent. The 'Cats were 4 of 18 from 3-point range and 16 for 23 at the free throw line.
Tieryn Plasch had 19 points for Bemidji State. The Beavers shot 22 of 47 from the field for 46.8 percent, going 8 of 17 behind the arc and 3 of 4 at the line.
Bemidji State held a 33-30 edge in rebounding over Wayne State. Norblade and
Meg Rietz each had seven boards for the Wildcats. Norblade handed out four assists.
WSC forced 22 turnovers in the game, resulting in a 19-2 edge in points off turnovers.
WSC travels to Minot State next Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest to close out the regular season.
