Wayne State baseball dropped a pair in a double header to University of Minnesota Crookston this evening down in Pueblo, Colorado. UMC won the first game 8-0 and won the second game 11-6 after shutting down a late comeback attempt by the Wildcats.
Game 1
The Wildcats dropped the first game Sunday afternoon down in Pueblo, Colorado to Crookston, 8-0. The Wildcats struggled to get on base, only recording two hits in the matchup.
Clay Beaumont started on the mound for the 'Cats and struck out two batters in 2.1 innings but surrendered five runs.
Keinan Lentell and
Adam Eggert closed out game one with one strikeout each and three more runs.
Quinn McCafferty and
Gabe Monosmith each recorded one hit for Wayne State. Monosmith's singled in the top of the third and McCafferty doubled in the fifth.
Game2
WSC cam out in game two with a little more fire, getting two hits in the first inning from
Chase Douglas and
Noah Strizek.
Taylor Gill would earn and walk and the 'Cats would have the bases loaded but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity to score.
Crookston opened the score with a pair of runs scored from a single out to center field before the third out.
Nate Cunningham homered over the left field fence to make it a 2-1 deficit. The next two Wildcats would ground out to end the top of the second.
The Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs on three hits and one error from the WSC defense. Neither team would see any runs scored in the third.
After the 'Cats went down in order in the fourth, UMC added to their lead with one run.
Douglas singled to left field to open the fifth and advanced to third after two wild pitches to provide a scoring opportunity. Unfortunately for the 'Cats, Douglas would not get that opportunity. Crookston added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Cunningham recorded his second hit of the game with a single to third base.
Casey Prychak doubled to left field and earned an RBI as Cunningham stepped on home plate. UMC would shut the door on the 'Cats after they loaded the bases for the second time in the game and only allowed the one run scored.
Conlin Grady now on the bump for the 'Cats would strike out the side in the bottom of the sixth.
UMC added onto their lead in the seventh inning with three runs on two hits and another error by WSC.
Blake Stanley would score on an error by the Golden Eagle defense to give the Wildcats their third run on the game. WSC would leave two runners stranded to close the top of the eighth inning.
In the top of the final inning, the Wildcats would try to mount a comeback, putting three runs on the board thanks to a Stanley single, error, and a bases loaded walk.
UMC would take the win 11-6
Douglas, Strizek, and Cunningham all record two hits with Cunningham leading the way with two runs and one RBI.
Josh Kilzer recorded six strikeouts for the Wildcats.
The two teams close out their four-game NSIC series Monday with a nine-inning game at noon in Pueblo, Colorado.
