WSC completes sweep of Bemidji State

            Wayne State College completed a four-game NSIC baseball series sweep Friday afternoon over Bemidji State with 6-3 and 19-1 wins over the Beavers at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  The 'Cats are now 9-8  and 5-3 in the NSIC while BSU is 1-13 and 0-8 in league play.
            The opener saw the Wildcats snap a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with one run while adding two insurance runs in the sixth for a 6-3 victory.
            Bemidji State opened with two runs in the first and held a 2-0 lead in the third until the 'Cats got on the scoreboard when Casey Prychak hit a leadoff double and later scored on a double play to make the score 2-1.
            The 'Cats added two runs in the fourth for a 3-2 lead without a hit as Taylor Gill walked and scored on a Braden Cannon sacrifice fly for the first run.  Quinn McCafferty was hit by a pitch and on a Beaver throwing error.
            The Beavers tied the score in the fifth with one run to make it 3-3, but WSC regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Chase Douglas doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Max Heard.
            Two insurance runs in the sixth came on three hits with Connor Hunt producing a two-run single that brought home Kaden Young (walk) and McCafferty (single).
            WSC had one more hit than Bemidji State 8-7.  Douglas finished 3 for 4 with a run scored.  Hunt was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and two RBI while Prychak doubled.
            Starting pitcher Clay Beaumont worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.  Senior reliever Eli Crnkovich worked the next 1 2/3 innings without giving up a hit and fanning two batters.  Closer Braden Cannon worked the seventh and allowed two walks before getting out of the inning for his second save of the year.
            The second game saw WSC scored six runs in the fourth and eight more in the sixth to pick up a 19-1 win.
            Trailing 1-0 entering the third, the 'Cats scored three runs highlighted by a Douglas two-run homer over the left field wall for a 3-1 lead.
            A six-run fourth inning for WSC was fueled by a Prychak RBI triple, a two-run single by Nate Cunningham and RBI singles from Cam Madsen and Taylor Gill for a 9-1 Wayne State lead.
            WSC added two runs in the fifth on just one hit, an RBI single from Brayden Chaney.
            The 'Cats closed the scoring with eight runs in the sixth on just three hits.  Cunningham had a two-run homer to center field.  Chaney had an RBI single and Cannon also singled in the inning.
            WSC had 13 hits in the win, led by Cunningham going 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBI.  Chaney was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles, two RBI and two runs scored.  Douglas ended 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Madsen went 2 for 4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
            Starter Tyson Romero pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out six batters allowing three hits and one run.  Senior reliever Jacob Kneifl notched the win (1-0) working 2/3 of an inning.  Kyler Hanson, Brooks Kneifl and Clement Febus each worked one inning of relief to close the contest.
            Wayne State will be at home again next weekend hosting Minot State in a four-game series with doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23.
