Wayne State was led by junior
JJ Ferrin and senior
Andrew Stokes in a road win of the University of Mary as the pair recorded career highs in points with 29 and 23 respectively. After trailing by five at the break, WSC outscored UMary 44-22 in the second half to improve to 11-8 and 7-6 in NSIC while the Marauders fell to 5-14 and 3-10.
The Marauders opened the game with six three pointers and an and-1 bucket to hold a 21-18 lead midway through the first half. UMary would hit 11 triples in the first half and held a five-point lead heading to the break.
JJ Ferrin would lead the 'Cats offense with five threes and 15 points.
Andrew Stokes would follow with eight and
Kai Smith would lead with four rebounds.
A pair of Ferrin triples and a Stokes layup would give the 'Cats the lead two minutes into the second half and they would not look back.
Wayne State would go on a 15-0 in the first six minutes of the second half before the Marauders would score. UMary would hit a pair of threes to make it a six-point deficit and eventually cut it to a four-point Wildcat lead late in the half.
Stokes would connect on a pair of free throws and after a shot clock violation and an
Aurrion Harris alley-oop drunk, the 'Cats would seal the game and extend their lead back out to 17.
WSC would sink the Marauders 91-74.
JJ Ferrin would lead all scores with his career-high 29 points followed by
Andrew Stokes with his career best 23 points and season-high nine rebounds.
Ferrin's nine threes would be the third most in a game since Bryce Caldwell back in 2007 against MSU Moorhead. WSC shot 50.8% in the game and connected on 60% of their threes (12-20). Wayne State would also make 15 of their 17 free throws, a little over double what UMary made (6-7).
The Wildcats play again Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Minot State.
