The Wayne State College softball team closed their Florida spring break trip Wednesday afternoon with a 12-2 victory over Point Park (Pa.) at the Spring Games in Bartow, Florida. The 'Cats end their Florida trip with an 8-2 record and are now 20-4 overall this season while the Pioneers slip to 1-7.
Wayne State scored at least one run in all five innings of the victory and had five players record two or more hits.
Emilee Marth opened the scoring for the 'Cats with an RBI single bringing home
Jordyn Klein, who reached on an error.
Leah Chance walked and stole home for the second run while
Maddie Scobee had a sacrifice fly that drove home Marth with the third run to open the first inning.
WSC took a 5-0 lead in the second with two more runs as Marth had an RBI triple to bring home Chance (walked) and Marth scored on a Scobee RBI single.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the third for a 7-0 advantage.
Reagan Dreibelbis doubled and scored on a single from Chance while Marth laced an RBI single to left field scoring Dreibelbis.
Four runs in the fourth put WSC in front 11-0. Scobee,
Mattingly Barnes and
Lillie Timm each recorded RBI singles in the inning.
Point Park avoided the shutout and no-hit bid by WSC pitchers
Taylor Coleman and
Jordan Brustuen with one hit and two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 11-2.
Wayne State scored their final run of the game in the fifth inning
Taylor Fritz walked and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by
Jordan Brustuen putting the 'Cats in front 12-2 to close the scoring.
WSC had 14 hits in the win, led by Marth going 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBI. Scobee was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and three RBI. Dreibelbis was 2 for 2 with a double and run scored while Barnes finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and run scored and Timm also finished with two hits for the 'Cats.
Taylor Coleman was the starting pitcher and worked the first three innings for the win, now 6-1 on the season. She did not allow a hit or run and struck out six with one walk. Brustuen finished the contest and worked the final two innings giving up two runs on one hit with one strikeout and two walks.
Wayne State is off until Saturday, March 21
st when the Wildcats open Northern Sun Conference play at Minnesota Duluth for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
