Taylor Coleman had a walk-off single in the opener and pitched five strong innings to earn the win in the second game while going a combined 3 for 6 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored to lead Wayne State softball in a 4-3 and 7-4 NSIC softball sweep over the University of Sioux Falls Thursday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC improves to 33-11 overall and 13-7 in the NSIC with the wins while USF drops to 22-23 on the season and 10-10 in league play.
The opener showcased a pitching battle between Wayne State's
Kennadi Borngrebe and Maddi Duncan of Sioux Falls. Both threw complete games with the Wildcats prevailing in the eighth inning on Coleman's walk-off hit.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth. WSC answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on two hits and two Cougar errors to take a 3-2 lead.
Leah Chance opened the inning reaching on a USF throwing error followed by a single up the middle from
Emilee Marth. Both players scored on a Borngrebe single to left field while Coleman scored on another throwing error by the Cougars after getting hit by the pitch.
WSC maintained a 3-2 lead entering the seventh when Sioux Falls tied the game on a one-out solo homer sending the contest into extra innings.
In the eighth, Chance walked and moved to second on a fielder's choice. After a ground out, Coleman on the first pitch of the at-bat laced a single to center field bringing home Chance with the game-winner.
Both teams had seven hits in the game. Marth was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and two runs scored while Borngrebe was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI.
Borngrebe picked up the complete-game win in the circle, now 13-6 on the year. She struck out eight and walked three while giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits.
The second game saw Coleman strike out nine batters in five innings to get the win while also going 2 for 3 at the plate as Wayne State completed the sweep with a 7-4 victory.
USF opened the scoring with one run in the first, but WSC roared back with four runs to take control of the contest thanks to five hits and a pair of Cougar errors. Big hits in the inning included RBI singles from Marth and
Reagan Dreibelbis.
Both teams scored runs in the third to make the score 5-2.
Maddie Scobee opened the inning with a single and pinch-runner
Masyn Bunnell later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lille Timm.
Sioux Falls scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the WSC advantage to 5-4, but WSC countered with two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the three-run lead. Dreibelbis had a two-run single to center field scoring Scobee (hit by pitch) and Coleman (doubled).
Junior reliever
Jadeyn Stahr came on for the final two innings and fired two innings of hitless relief to earn the save as WSC completed the sweep with the 7-4 win.
Wayne State had 11 hits in the win, led by Dreibelbis going 3 for 3 with three RBI. Coleman was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Scobee and Marth each added two singles in the win.
Coleman (12-4) picked up the pitching win, working five innings allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Stahr recorded her fourth save of the year pitching two hitless innings of relief.
The Wildcats will be on the road Sunday afternoon visiting Southwest Minnesota State for an NSIC doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
