Sophomore third baseman
Maddie Scobee went 3-3 for and drove in all three runs to lead Wayne State in a 3-2 win over Concordia-St. Paul Thursday evening in the Northern Sun Conference Softball Tournament quarterfinals. The Wildcats advance to Friday's 2:30 p.m. semi-final game against #25 St. Cloud State with a 42-13 record while the Golden Bears end the season at 29-25.
The contest was a pitcher's battle as both starters – Wayne State's
Kennadi Borngrebe and Concordia-St. Paul's Emmy Bowne – pitched complete games in the circle.
Offensively, Wayne State relied on Scobee and junior outfielder
Jordyn Klein who combined for all five Wildcat hits in the game and three runs scored.
WSC struck first in the opening inning as Klein led off the game with a single through the left side and with two outs Scobee belted a two-run homer over the left field wall putting the 'Cats in front 2-0.
Concordia-St. Paul tied the score in the top of the third scoring two runs on three hits to make it a 2-2 game.
The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth when Klein opened the inning with a double to center field. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Leah Chance and scored the game-winning run on Scobee's single up the middle for the 3-2 Wildcat win.
WSC had one more hit in the game than CSP 5-4. Scobee was a perfect 3 for 3 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored while Klein went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
In the circle, Borngrebe posted her 17
th complete game of the season to earn the win improving to 19-6 on the season. She allowed just four hits and two runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State and #25 St. Cloud State meet at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the NSIC Softball Tournament semi-finals at Bowden Field in Sioux Falls.
