Katie Morris

Katie Morris is in her ninth year (2025-26) as an Assistant Volleyball Coach for Wayne State College. She also assists with the Wildcat Beach Volleyball program in the spring.  Morris is in charge of coaching Wildcat outside hitters and works heavily with the serve receive pattern while also assisting with recruiting duties at Wayne State.

During her time on the Wildcat bench, the former Katie Hughes Morris has helped the Wildcats win two NSIC regular season championships (2022 and 2023), two NCAA Tournament appearances (2022 and 2023), one NCAA Central Region title (2023) and one trip to the NCAA Elite Eight (2023).

Morris has also helped coach several All-Conference, All-Region and All-America performers, including outside hitter Kelsie Cada who was All-NSIC First Team and AVCA All-Central Region First Team in 2022 and 2023 to go with AVCA All-America Second Team honors in 2023.  Libero Jessie Brandl was an All-NSIC Second Team selection in 2022.  Under Morris, Wayne State ranked second in the nation in hitting percentage in 2023 (.314) and was fourth in the 2022 season (.283).

Morris is also in charge of Wildcat volleyball study tables, helping Wayne State volleyball achieve one of the top grade point averages in NCAA Division II.  In the classroom, Wayne State has earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll Award for 21 straight seasons, the longest streak in NCAA Division II.  WSC had a 3.80 cumulative grade point average last year (2022-23) and has ranked consistently in the top 10 in grade point averages nationally.  Several Wildcat players have also collected prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America honors recently with Taya Beller and Rachel Walker named Academic All-Americans in 2022 and 2023 and Jordan McCormick in 2023.  McCormick was also named the top scholar athlete at the NCAA and NSIC Championships in 2023, earning the NCAA Elite 90 and NSIC Elite 18 Awards.

A former Wildcat volleyball standout, Morris is one of just eight players in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs during her playing career from 2012-15.  She currently ranks third in career digs (1,924) and is 16th in career kills with 1,177.

Morris was a First Team All-NSIC selection as a senior in 2015, recording 20 double-doubles while averaging 3.57 kills and 4.74 digs per set.  She helped the Wildcats to a 28-8 record and the schools' first-ever NCAA Central Region title that ended in the NCAA Division II national semi-finals.  Morris was Second Team All-NSIC during her junior season in 2014 and was a four year starter for the Wildcats.

Morris was awarded the AVCA 30-Under-30 Beach Volleyball Coaching Award in 2021 that recognizes up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport.  She was also inducted into the Wayne State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022 for her athletic accomplishments.

A graduate of Seward High School, Hughes Morris obtained a bachelor degree from Wayne State in 2017 with a double major in education and special education.

Katie and her husband, former Wildcat baseball player Spencer Morris, reside in Wayne.
