St. Cloud State used 58.8 percent field goal shooting (40 of 68) to roll over Wayne State 99-71 in non-conference men's college basketball played Tuesday evening in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Huskies moved to 3-0 on the young season while sending Wayne State to 2-1 overall.
The Wildcats never led in the game as the host Huskies used 61 percent shooting in the first half (24 of 39) to build a 58-34 lead at the intermission. SCSU led by as many as 27 points early in the second half, but Wayne State cut the lead to 14 points, 74-60 with 8:36 remaining, following a pair of David Walters free throws for the Wildcats. But the Huskies went on a 13-4 run over the next two minutes to push the lead back up to 24 points and the Huskies cruised to the easy win.
Sophomore guard Jamar Diggs scored 23 points on 10 of 14 shooting to lead the Wildcats in scoring. Senior guard Bryce Caldwell accounted for 14 points while senior backup center Matt Rathje recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. WSC shot a repsectable 47.4 percent from the field, making 27 of 57 shots. The 'Cats were 7 of 14 from the three point line and 10 of 16 at the charity stripe.
For St. Cloud State, sophomore center Ross Winnekins poured in a game-high 24 points on 10 of 15 shooting to lead the Huskies. David Dreas finished with 11 points while Matt Schneck added 10 for the Huskies, who shot 40 of 68 from the field for 58.8 percent. SCSU canned 10 of 17 three pointers (58.8%) and was a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line.
St. Cloud State held a slight 33-29 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats as Winnekins grabbed six boards to lead the Huskies while Rathje hauled in 10 caroms to pace Wayne State. WSC had 18 turnovers to just 11 for SCSU.
The Wildcats continue their six-game road trip Saturday evening with a visit to Chadron State with tip off set for 8:30 p.m. Central Time.
