The Wayne State College cross country teams competed in the SDSU Classic held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota Saturday. The Wildcat women's team placed eighth out of 12 teams with 191 points while the Wayne State men's squad was ninth out of 12 teams with 245 points.
The University of Minnesota, who is rated ninth in NCAA Division I, won the women's division with 24 points, topping second place Kansas State with 50 points. North Dakota State (112), South Dakota State (119) and South Dakota (124) round out the top five women's scores.
Senior Megan Zavorka led the WSC women's team placing 20th overall out of 70 runners with a time of 19:04 on the 5,00 meter course. Freshmen Ky'Lee Engelken placed 33rd with a time of 19:35, Engelken was the top freshmen not from a NCAA Division I team. Other WSC finishers were Sarah Thomsen 43rd in 20:17, Meghan Jacob 46th in 20:26, Melissa McIntosh 49th in 20:33, Molly Gibson 50th in 20:38, Jenna McCoy 66th in 22:12.
Host South Dakota State won the men's race with 25 points followed by Nebraska-Kearney in second place with 67 points. Minnesota State (87), Kansas State (110) and North Dakota State (118) round out the top five teams.
John Kern was the top finisher for the WSC men's team, taking 31st out of 79 runners with a time of 27:08 on the 8,000 meter course. Junior York Thomas was 43rd with a time of 27:24, Matt Seiler finished in 50th place with a time of 28:15, Trevor Urkoski topped his personal best time finishing in 57th with a time of 28:43, and Jason Schaaf crossed the line in 64th place with a time of 29:43.
Wayne State returns to action on Saturday, October 10 competing in the NCAA Division II Pre-Regional meet in Wayne, America.
