Wayne State 75 Chadron State 72
Sophomore guard Jamar Diggs scored a career-high 30 points and Wayne State rallied from a 16-point first half deficit to edge Chadron State 75-72 in men's college basketball played Saturday evening in Chadron, Nebraska. The Wildcats improved to 3-1 on the young season while keeping Chadron State winless at 0-4.
Wayne State trailed by as much as 16 points in the first half, 37-21 with 6:13 left in the first half, and trailed by 10 at halftime 42-32. The Wildcats slowed chipped at the Eagles' lead and took their first lead in the second half at 59-58 with 8:35 to go following a three pointer by senior guard Bryce Caldwell. After exchanging the lead several times, Chadron State grabbed a 70-67 lead with 2:52 remaining, but WSC scored the next seven points to go in front 74-70 with 57 seconds remaining in the game. A pair of Kyle Cotton free throws pulled CSC within two points at 74-72 with 43 seconds left. Wayne State's Jamar Diggs sank one of two free throws with 11 seconds left to give WSC a 75-72 lead. Chadron State had a chance to tie the game, but Tim McLaurin missed a three pointer as time expired to give Wayne State the come-from-behind win.
Diggs scored his career-high 30 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the field, including 7 of 8 from the three point line. He also sank 3 of 6 free throws to account for his 30 points. Senior guard Bryce Caldwell added 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting, which included four three pointers.
As a team, WSC shot 29 of 61 from the field (47.5 %) and hit 11 of 25 three pointers for 44 percent. The 'Cats were just 6 of 14 at the charity stripe.
For Chadron State, Kyle Cotton scored 16 points with Tim McLaurin adding 13. The Eagles hit 23 of 58 shots from the floor for 39.7 percent, 12 of 29 from the three point line (41.4%) and 14 of 23 at the free throw line.
Both teams finished with 38 rebounds as Matt Rathje grabbed seven boards to lead Wayne State while McLaurin hauled in a game-high nine rebounds for the Eagles. WSC had just 11 turnovers, one less than CSC. Caldwell was credited with six assists to lead the Wildcats with David Walters handing out four.
Wayne State will continue their six-game road trip with a Monday evening matchup at in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney with tip off set for 7:00 p.m.
